“We really enjoyed the quiet simplicity of El Quacamayo...a place to sit back and be in nature!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2011

A few days a in Placencia to be by the sea, then to San Ignacio for the market, and finally to the mountains at El Guacamayo for a chance to relax in a beautiful natural setting. The accommodations were perfect, overlooking the valley. The meals, cooked over an open fire, were plentiful, fresh and delicious. We played in the river, walked through the Maya ruins on site, watched the birds, butterflies, and fireflies, and enjoyed the sunsets and so many stars in the night sky.
David, Julia, and Larry are gracious hosts. We can't wait to visit again.

“Perfect, but not for everyone”

I hesitate to write a review for El Guacamayo because I think it could easily ruin what makes this place so great.
We stayed in a tent, but the cabanas looked very nice. Larry, David, and Julia are truly good people who treat as though you are guests in their home rather than campers on their property. The grounds are covered by large mango, banana, and coconut trees and there is a large patch of pineapple bushes. Excellent views of the surrounding areas are provided by a steep 168 or so steps to a river crossing. The 'adventurous' ride back to town takes a bit of time, but is a magnificent one if you enjoy the countryside and don't mind getting stuck behind a herd of Brahman cattle.
El Guacamayo is not a good place for loud partying or a quick and convenient spot to crash between adventure tours. It is an excellent place, however, for relaxation and contemplation miles away from the closest t-shirt shop, and an incredible meal with friendly conversation.

“hospitality at it's best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2010

You will not find a kinder host than Larry at El Guacamayo. He picked us up from San Ignacio town and dropped us off again in the morning when we wanted to visit the ATM caves (ask for Carlos Panti, he is the best!). On our final morning, he was even kind enough to drop us off at our next hotel closer to the Guatemalan border. All your meals are included, and they are very generous with the servings, with Larry always going out of his way to make sure you have what you need. David from David's Adventure Tours also lives here and although his truck is a bit rickety, he is also generous with the rides. The rooms are basic but very comfortable. As other reviews have stated, there isn't a ceiling, but when we stayed it was just us and Larry so it wasn't a big deal. My only real recommendations would be to install some mosquito netting and maybe put up a sign in the bathroom indicating where you can wash your hands since it isn't obvious at first. Other than that, I loved my stay here and I would go back again, especially to play with Tasha, the world's friendliest Doberman :)

“THE PART OF MY TRIP THAT, I CHERISH AND LEARNED THE MOST FROM”

I was sold on the beaches of Belize. I can enjoy the forest and hikes, but they are not my cup of tea. I always thought, that I prefer water and sand. Two weeks in Belize, I consider the three days that I spent in the mountains with David and company to be the most worthwhile and best time spent in Belize. The land is amazing and the food is unbeatable. But, the best part is to spend time with a beautiful Belizian resident that is dedicated to his country and making you comfortable. Take note, though. David somehow exposes you to the country and it's most memorable residents while giving cave tours and explaining trees/birds/flowers/customs/culture/history in an intimate and heartbreaking way. I was not the same when I left. The experience is not for the pampered or closed. If you want to be privy to the culture and kindness; forget agendas, believe in the goodness of man,,David Simpson is the start and finish.
