“Very good place to stay and get your bearings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2010

We were diverted to Belize when the Volcano Pacaya erupted and we could not get any flights out while vacationing in Guatemala (The airports shut down for 3 days). When the bus arrived in Belize City, we decided to trust a taxi driver who gave a few suggestions and then waited with us at the Coningsby for the owner to return from the Post Office and help us. Owner Jeannete was very helpful and booked us a room. She was quite interested in getting us info on tourist places, although she didn't offer to let us see her quidebook til our last day there. We were in room 9 and I hope she has someone fix the A/C unit in there as it seems to be on its last legs; there are several bits of paper jammed in the sides to keep it from vibrating off the wall. Hopefully they will get some new bedding: the sheets on our bed were stained or torn and mended and did not fit well. Remember the advice given to tourists while you are in Belize City: do not wear any jewelry and get off the streets before evening.
There is construction going on next to the Coningsby and it seems some workers live there as well; they started working at 7 am even on weekend days.

“DO NOT stay here!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2010

My partner and I stayed here for one night in may before flying out of the country.
We wanted to stay in the hotel across the road, but was fully booked and to be honest I think i would rather take a chance sleeping on the street!! It was the worst hotel i have stayed in, and I have stayed in some dumps before. The whole hotel was dated and tired looking, the room was dirty, damp and smelt, the Sheets smelt like they hadn't been changed.... ever!
The air con didn't work properly and was noisy, the dog that lives outside of the rooms spent most of the night barking.
On a small plus the staff were nice and helpful and didn't seem to realize that they worked somewhere so bad.
But all in all a very shocking experience, and i strongly advise pre booking somewhere in Belize city because you do not want to end up here!!

“Plan on going back!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 April 2010

I stayed at the Coningsby Inn for 4 nights recently when I went to Belize and really enjoyed myself. The staff are very sweet and helpful and the food is great! It's very affordable and clean (and I'm very picky!) and they will go out of their way to help you plan little adventures. It's in Belize City but it's tucked away from the noise and chaos of downtown and about 3 minutes away from the water. You can easily walk to several restaurants, shops, bars, the bus station and the water taxi station from here. One of the biggest perks, in my opinion, was that I could leave my hotel and explore the city on foot (it's small but there is a lot to see just w/in Belize City). The picture attached is the view from behind the hotel of the sea. Most of my evenings were spent on the upstairs porch laughing and drinking w/the other hotel guests. If you stop by be sure and say hi to Roger, the resident watchdog.

“Close to everything for backpackers and great staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2010

This is not the cleaniest hotel, but the service is good, the place is safe (even tough it's in a bad neighborhood) and it's close to the banks, taxi ferry, bus station, restaurants, cheap shops and colonial cultural buildings. Dont' miss Brid's Isle for dinner. Beware if you're a light sleeper, dogs in the neighborhood bark all night long!!!

“Mediocre hotel in a mediocre city”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2008

We only stayed one night in Belize City on our way from Tulum to Tikal. I have traveled throughout many out-of-the-way places in Mexico, but the trip from the border of Mexico to Belize City was rather depressing. It was more of a dirty kind of poverty - we passed many areas with broken down, rusted cars in the yard, and many houses in various states of disrepair. We arrived in Belize City in the evening, and although we usually travel by public transportation, we opted to take a taxi to our hotel. The Coningsby Inn had a locked door, which I suppose is normal for the area, and the city. The owner and employees were very friendly, and the public spaces were attractive. We had a room for three (2 adults and one child) for $65 Am. dollars. As it is not safe to walk around after dark in small groups, we walked with an American mission group, which was staying at the hotel, to a great restaurant - El Centro, which is a few blocks from the hotel. Our room was adequate, and clean, but that is about it. No frills, but a pretty nice shower. Dogs barking outside at night. The road was being worked on in front of the hotel, so was a dirt road. They have a sitting area upstairs, where we bought a beer while we read our books at night. The breakfast was wonderful, and the cook was friendly and charming! We had Belizian flapjacks and they were wonderful! Not a great hotel, but in a decent location and a good, convenient place to spend a night if passing through town.

  • Liked — Nice shower!
  • Disliked — Location - Belize City is not a greatl, safe town!
