Gaby picked up my wife and I from the airport in his pickup (US$25, standard fee) and took us to his nice inn for one night. We were en route to Ambergris Caye the next morning. He also drove us for a small fee (to cover pricey gas) to a restaurant for dinner and to the water taxi the next day. D'Nest is a pretty home on a canal (not swimmable) between the airport and town (10 minutes either way). I recommend staying there and not in town as it's relatively safe in a quiet neighborhood. You can get public transport if you're on a budget by walking a few blocks to the main road, or Gaby will call a cab for you if he's busy. Our room was the Dove and it overlooked the backyard and canal. Very nice room with a large comfy bed and private bath. There is a small but nice Belizian breakfast in the morning prepared by Octi, Gaby's lovely wife. We were impressed by the genuine friendliness and openness of our hosts who treated us like family. Gaby spent time chatting with us- he's a retired banker and very intelligent. Their grandkids were very polite and nice as is typical of Belizians. There is a nearby store if you want to buy beer or supplies and several nearby restaurants if you don't fancy going into town. We ate at the Riverside in town, surrounded by barbed wire and guards at the gate and door. The guests were upper class, young for the most part, and loud. It's more of a sport's bar atmosphere, but you can sit outside if there is room but it's noisy there too. Food is good but beer is pricey. I highly recommend a stay at D'Nest before venturing onward to the Cayes or inland to the rainforest. We paid about $87 for our room and credit cards are accepted. Other rooms are slightly cheaper.
