Nice clean room, warm shower, great customer service. Serve coffee downstairs in the morning.

I stayed at Hotel Mopan for two nights at the end of December. I really enjoyed my time there. Alex is amazing and so helpful. He set us up with a great trip to Lamanai and talked to us about all kinds of things. He always recommended great places to eat. The hotel itself is not fancy, but it is clean. There were no towels in our bathroom, but there was hot water. The nights were quiet and there is a nice porch to sit on. We walked at night and didn't find it terrifying as everyone says, but you should take basic precautions like don't take all your money with you, have a destination and purpose, don't look lost, etc.

My brother and I were traveling by bus from Tulum, Mexico and planning to continue to the Cayo District, but we needed to stay a night in Belize City to pick a friend up from the airport the next day. We hadn´t made any reservations and heard about Hotel Mopan from some other travelers on our bus.

The hotel itself is pretty bare-bones and could definitely use a good facelift, but most importantly, it was clean! There is a restaurant, but no one is working in the kitchen. They do offer free coffee in the morning, and there is a good breakfast place across the street.

The best thing about the hotel was the staff! Alex (mornings and nights) chatted with us even after his shift ended about all sorts of topics -- politics, tourism, languages, etc. He is quite insightful. Andrea (day shift) helped me check on our friend´s flight the next day and arrange for transportation.

That being said... this is my second time to Belize, and I would never recommend that anyone stay in Belize City. Belizeans themselves will tell you that it is not safe to walk around at night. The rest of the country is so beautiful that it seems like a waste to stay here. But if you HAVE to spend a night, I highly recommend the Hotel Mopan. It´s also right near the harbor and within walking distance to the lighthouse, so at least there are things to see...during the daytime.

This place is um very so-so IMO. The price is a bit high for what you get but that seems to be the case in Belize City. Anyway the taxi from the international airport drove us here for $25, which seems very expensive for a 20 minute ride. But that's what they all charge and there really isn't a bus to town from the airport. So be prepare to pay this amount! The front desk guy is very helpful and after we checked in recommended a nice place on the waterfront for dinner, which is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel called Bird's Isle. The room itself is very plain, we had a private bathroom, also very so-so. We walked around town a bit in the afternoon, nothing much to say. Let's just say we will not be spending any time in Belize City in the future :-) fly or bus out from here to your destination as soon as you arrive is probably a good idea.
