I do agree with the previous comment about the hotel being tired looking. Pulling up in front of the hotel, we were in awe of how regal it looked. Hurricane Richard had not been kind to a bit of her roof and railing, but the repairs had already started. Entering the front French doors made us feel "elite" like the rich and famous. There were comments made about how it needs some work done on the inside. Well people, if you were created in the 1800's, you would need some work done too. The lady at the front desk was very prompt at getting us registered and getting a bellboy to take our bags to our room. The stairs leading to our floor made me feel like we were in a movie stars home. The hallway to the rooms needs work done. They have carpeting which I wish they would replace with the original wood.
We got to the door, inserted the key, opened the door and gasped. What a fabulous "old charm" room. Spacious and with a king size bed, beautiful old writing desk, a sitting area with a 3 piece rattan ensemble and a modern tv which looked totally out of place for the time period we had just entered, but we appreciated it. The bathroom was very large, very clean and very modern. The view of the ocean from our room was great even if it was overcast.
We were hungry so we decided to venture upstairs to the bar and restaurant. A little work needs to be done to the walls in there, but it was clean and neat--white tablecloths and napkins, water glasses, cutlery for every course and good waitresses named Indira and Kashera. Indira took care of us in the bar area for our lunch. Very nice and friendly. At dinner we had Kashera who was very patient with us over our menus with all our questions. Dinner was very nice.
Now it's time to go to bed in our HUGE bed and have a great night's sleep and sleep we did very well.
Next morning we head to the restaurant for breakfast and who is there to greet us but Kashera again just as cheerful as the night before. This meal was also very good.
Now it's time to explore the "majestic old girl". Every room made you wonder what it was like when it was first built. You wonder what went on in this room and that room. You feel like you want to know more about the mansion and the people that first lived there and have passed through the doors..
My husband wanted to stay here because of the movie "The Dogs of War" which was filmed there in the late 70's. He was thrilled to walk down the staircase onto the large front porch.
If you prefer "old world charm" over name brand hotels then consider this if you are passing through Belize City.
We will definitely stay there again.
