This dive was too expensive - $165 for 2 tanks from cruise ship Carnival Liberty. I was expecting Belize to make my list of top dive spots, but now I am in no hurry to go back - they under whelmed me. On the same cruise I enjoyed and had much better diving at 3 of my top favorites - Cozumel, Roatan and Grand Cayman and they still remain in my top 5. I'm in no hurry to get back to Belize for diving now.
The cruise ship's 2 tank dive was to Turneffe Atoll for $169. I expected much more. The dives were not really that far away - the ship stated 2 hours(I guess round trip transit time) it was just that the divers were put on a slow catamaran with a big group of snorkelers for the first part of the trip to their island dive shop and base of operations - about 25-30 minutes on the slow boat. The trip to the atoll on the fast dive boat was more like 20-25 minutes. Going back later in the day they stopped by their island resort again for drinks, souvenirs, etc before taking us back to the ship. So I felt the distance and time wasn't worth such a high price. The diving wasn't great either. The actual dive boat was large enough that 18 divers from the Liberty had enough room because the boat looked equipped to handle 20 or more divers. The divers were also split evenly into 3 groups of 6 which was a good arrangement and good dive management. The rental equipment didn't give me any problems and seemed good. The Belize dive guides were all great - enthusiastic, entertaining, good guides and seemed well experienced and safe.
Going out to the atoll from the dive shop they seemed to motor directly to the closest point on the atoll. The dive boat had motor problems after the first dive - two engine control cable "broke" - and they barely moved - motored to barely move a few hundred feet, so both dives were basically, exactly the same terrain. The underwater scape was just sloping sand with sponges and soft corals - not much hard coral, no large coral formations, no walls or swim throughs and nothing special in the amount or variety of fish. I did see two eagle rays but almost at viz limit and for only a minute or so. I felt the dives were rather drab compared to other places I have dived in the Caribbean and then we were stuck diving almost the same spot for the second dive. Afterwards I felt pretty much ripped off to pay that much for those 2 mediocre dives and a broken down dive boat. About a year ago I paid more like $189 for a 2 tank dive on the Rhone wreck from a cruise ship - now that was worth the money. This ship's tour was a waste and turned me off on wanting to get back to dive in Belize gain - Belize is way down my list now. Quite a few years ago I stayed a week on Ambergis Caye at Belize and had much better snorkeling from the shore than this boat diving.
Maybe just unlucky on the boat problem, however, just a day later I was diving with the cruise ship's doctor in Roatan. She quizzed me about the name of the outfit I dived with in Belize and when I said Hugh Parkey's - she realized it was the same she had dived once before. She indicated that she felt they weren't worth it but I didn't get any further details. Probably an experiences similar to mine - not as good as expected diving.
A special beer drinkers note - I did remember and really liked and the dive base's restaurant on the island had Belikin Dark. It's a "not bitter" dark beer and a favorite - I put away 3 before we had to head back to the cruise ship. Belikin regular seems like a typical tasting beer, so I was glad they had the dark - a highlight of my day. I also did enjoy the boat rides - seeing some of the cays and scenery of Belize and we weer blessed with mostly sunny beautiful clear weather. Another bad indicator I guess - I have better memories of the Belikin beer, boat rides and scenery more than the diving.
If you feel this is high priced I would recommend you catch Belize diving some other way or some other time. Cave tubing in Belize is my favorite tour right behind good diving.
