“Not worth the cost - average dives”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This dive was too expensive - $165 for 2 tanks from cruise ship Carnival Liberty. I was expecting Belize to make my list of top dive spots, but now I am in no hurry to go back - they under whelmed me. On the same cruise I enjoyed and had much better diving at 3 of my top favorites - Cozumel, Roatan and Grand Cayman and they still remain in my top 5. I'm in no hurry to get back to Belize for diving now.

The cruise ship's 2 tank dive was to Turneffe Atoll for $169. I expected much more. The dives were not really that far away - the ship stated 2 hours(I guess round trip transit time) it was just that the divers were put on a slow catamaran with a big group of snorkelers for the first part of the trip to their island dive shop and base of operations - about 25-30 minutes on the slow boat. The trip to the atoll on the fast dive boat was more like 20-25 minutes. Going back later in the day they stopped by their island resort again for drinks, souvenirs, etc before taking us back to the ship. So I felt the distance and time wasn't worth such a high price. The diving wasn't great either. The actual dive boat was large enough that 18 divers from the Liberty had enough room because the boat looked equipped to handle 20 or more divers. The divers were also split evenly into 3 groups of 6 which was a good arrangement and good dive management. The rental equipment didn't give me any problems and seemed good. The Belize dive guides were all great - enthusiastic, entertaining, good guides and seemed well experienced and safe.

Going out to the atoll from the dive shop they seemed to motor directly to the closest point on the atoll. The dive boat had motor problems after the first dive - two engine control cable "broke" - and they barely moved - motored to barely move a few hundred feet, so both dives were basically, exactly the same terrain. The underwater scape was just sloping sand with sponges and soft corals - not much hard coral, no large coral formations, no walls or swim throughs and nothing special in the amount or variety of fish. I did see two eagle rays but almost at viz limit and for only a minute or so. I felt the dives were rather drab compared to other places I have dived in the Caribbean and then we were stuck diving almost the same spot for the second dive. Afterwards I felt pretty much ripped off to pay that much for those 2 mediocre dives and a broken down dive boat. About a year ago I paid more like $189 for a 2 tank dive on the Rhone wreck from a cruise ship - now that was worth the money. This ship's tour was a waste and turned me off on wanting to get back to dive in Belize gain - Belize is way down my list now. Quite a few years ago I stayed a week on Ambergis Caye at Belize and had much better snorkeling from the shore than this boat diving.

Maybe just unlucky on the boat problem, however, just a day later I was diving with the cruise ship's doctor in Roatan. She quizzed me about the name of the outfit I dived with in Belize and when I said Hugh Parkey's - she realized it was the same she had dived once before. She indicated that she felt they weren't worth it but I didn't get any further details. Probably an experiences similar to mine - not as good as expected diving.

A special beer drinkers note - I did remember and really liked and the dive base's restaurant on the island had Belikin Dark. It's a "not bitter" dark beer and a favorite - I put away 3 before we had to head back to the cruise ship. Belikin regular seems like a typical tasting beer, so I was glad they had the dark - a highlight of my day. I also did enjoy the boat rides - seeing some of the cays and scenery of Belize and we weer blessed with mostly sunny beautiful clear weather. Another bad indicator I guess - I have better memories of the Belikin beer, boat rides and scenery more than the diving.

If you feel this is high priced I would recommend you catch Belize diving some other way or some other time. Cave tubing in Belize is my favorite tour right behind good diving.

“A Mixed Bag”

My husband and I just returned from Hugh Parkey's.

First the great: service was awesome. From their flexibility when we had to reschedule because we couldn't make our original dates, to the on-site services were great. Ronguel (the guy who handled all food and beverages) was a gem.

Also great: the tours, both kayaking in mangroves and snorkeling on the reef. Just a beautiful spot!

Next the good: The food was good (baking was really good). The facility and newly built cabins are nice, though rustic.

Next the bad: On our second to last day there was a pretty strong storm. Someone whom we hadn't worked with before (a manager maybe?), told us that we needed to leave the island that day because the weather was due to get really bad (a sail boat captain contradicted this forecast, though). Oddly, this "bad weather" coincided with several cruise ships coming in the next day and HP having a number of dive, snorkel and kayaking expeditions going out. We were not heart-broken about the change. When the next day came with absolutely clear blue skies and calm seas, I was pretty skeptical that it was our safety vs. their overbooked boats.

Next the terrible: Sand fleas. The management shut off the generator between midnight and 5 am. I'm good with eco friendly (and cost-conscious), but my husband and I both got at least 100 bites each. We awoke within 10 minutes of the generator (and ceiling fans) turning off because of the sand fleas and mosquitoes. They offered bug spray, but would not keep the generator turned on for us.

Also terrible: The hotel where they put us up for the night because of transferring off island was the Chalet Caribbean. Although a charming building from the outside, our room was a bit frightening. There were bugs (again) with air conditioning, bug spray, etc. We were put into a room with a full-sized bed and very little space around it. When I woke up, I saw what I am still praying was rust on the sheets (but it really did look like droplets of blood. Not mine).

So - Definitely a mixed bag. If you are not a bug-magnet, like eco-friendly and rustic places to stay, you would like Hugh Parkey's. If you are on a cruise and deciding on activities - I would highly recommend this place. However, as a place to stay for a while, I wouldn't recommend it.

“Amazing Trip”

I have posted a few pictures on Hugh Parkey's FACEBOOK page.
We traveled as a family. Our son had a blast on the island. He met a few friends and enjoyed the kayaking, the boat trips around the water, the hammock swinging and the snorkeling. And did I mention eating? The food and the drinks were outstanding. One day it poured and my son enjoyed watching movies, playing checkers and just chilling. The also have a neat little museum on the premises that my son enjoyed. He also learned how to do flips off the docks and let the baby crabs nibble on his toes. Even though I am a scuba diver, we didn't dive, just explored the island and ate and enjoyed ourselves. There was just something about looking out at the ocean that began under our beds, and see the sunrises and also watching the storm-lightning clouds off in the distance blow by. The cazillion stars at night and the blue of the water/sky was beautiful. We also met lifetime friends on the island that we hope to see again.
Loved the over-the-water cabanas.

“Good diving, but room for improvement”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

I booked a 2 tank boat dive with Hugh Parkey's in September 2011. The diving itself was pretty good, with beautiful underwater topography and lots of fish, but there were some issues with the overall experience that kept me from having the sort of experience that would qualify as excellent. The diving equipment itself was average fare for rental and the diving guides were hit or miss. One of my guides was really friendly, patient, and helpful and seemed to truly enjoy his job. The second guide, while competent, was a little on the surly side and made the experience a little uncomfortable, it seemed like we were an inconvenience. The two biggest issues I had, however, were the price and the safety of the dive. On one hand, the dive was one of the most expensive I have ever had, and while the quality of the sites were great, I didn't feel they justified the price, as I have had better for cheaper. Second, my guide didn't use a dive computer, but seemed to be calculating depth/times on the fly. I was keeping rough track on my own and it seemed we were spending way too long down at depths of 90-100 feet. Near the end of the dive I started experiencing nitrogen intoxication. While this was a little concerning, I had such a great time at depth that I wrote it off and dealt with the loopy feeling upon surfacing till it passed. While it ended up being no big deal, there could have been more serious consequences in retrospect. So in all, while I thoroughly enjoyed the dive, and at least one guide was great, I ended up with reservations over safety and a somewhat light wallet. I would go back if I had money to burn and could be sure of getting a good guide, but overall I wouldn't say I had a burning desire to return.

“Our host Mel was great... The diving not so much!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011 via mobile

Resort dives for 4 of our group was totally unacceptable and unsafe. Group watched video without any follow up or question and answers. 5 minutes each off the dock for skills then off to dive. 1 divemaster 4 divers. 1 diver ran out of air and had to do an out of air accent by himself. Another diver had a terrible mask squeeze and came up with 2 black eyes and highly bruised face. Very poor experience. Would not suggest them for new divers.
