“Best hotel in Caye Caulker.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Again, thanks to tripadvisor we found the perfect place in Caye Caulker. Taking the water taxi from Belize City is a snap and the Cabanas was right at the end of the pier. Perfect location and beautiful view of the Barrier Reef. The hotel was really clean and well maintained, and unlike a couple of recent reviews, we found it amazing how hard-working the staff and maintenance crews were. They were keeping the grounds spotless and always with a smile and hello. Caye Caulker in general was charming and rustic, and could use a few lessons in recycling, too many plastic water bottles and styrefoam containers littering the beachs for my taste, but it did add to the welcome non-modernized aspect to the place. The bar Uno Mas was great with the bartenders Jahmilli and Juballus, (probably not spelled right) really helpful and fun. Forget the cabanas with the rooftop terrace. Only for the hoity toity as the recent reviews show. I don't think anything would have pleased those people. Besides, being beside the pool is a lot better. We were in cabana 6, with a private little balcony. Loved it!

Room Tip: If it's available go for Cabana 6!

Hello,
Thanks you for your review it is much appreciated and we are very glad you enjoyed your stay.

In regard to the plastic bottles on the island. This is an issue I have been looking at also. I am currently working with a Belizean friend of mine on the island to begin importing biodegradable/recyclable bottles to Belize. Biodegradable food containers are already starting to be used widely. The more visitors request these in bars and restaurants the sooner we will see a positive change. Thank you for your support.

“Good rooms and nice bar!!”

The room are nice, but the best part of this hotel is the little bar called "Uno Mas". It is a nice area to sit and chat with fellow travelers and the bartender. Definietly worth stopping in for happy hour or a night cap.

“ok, but.......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

the rooms are small and dark.
they smell powerfully of a not too nice smelling antiseptic cleaner....good news is, the room seemed clean, bad news the smell is pretty nasty. there is a continental breakfast offered with the room price but if you don't get to the bar (where it is offered) early, the pastry is gone and not replenished. worst thing about staying here, however, is that they seem to be having trouble with their septic system and they ask you to not place ANY toilet paper into the toilet.
seems to be this isn't very sanitary. hotel is on the water, but don't mistake this for swimming access. the beach and water in front of the hotel are very dirty.......washed up plastic and cardboard, etc. Staff are friendly and the location is close to the town center, restaurants, etc.

Thank your for your recent feedback.
We are sorry some elements of your stay were not to your liking.
At Seaside we use the best cleaning products available in Belize that are also environmentally friendly.
We order enough pastries for every room, but it is difficult to ration these out as some people get up earlier and eat before heading off to dive.
We have now added fresh fruit to the bar breakfast, and will soon add coffee machines to the front cabanas for real early risers. The new Honeymoon suite has a full kitchen and coffee maker also.

There was no problem with the septic system, but like most responsible property owners on Caye Caulker, we do ask for nothing to be flushed down the toilets if possible. The bins are changed everyday in the bathroom. This is due to the unavailability of non bleached tissue paper in Belize, which damages the septic tank operation. This policy is very common in fragile eco systems all over the world.

Belize is not famed for its swimming beaches but we are just completing our new sea wall area which give a nice open clean area of sand and an area to have a paddle if required. This is cleaned daily by our staff even though it is a public area and not owned by the hotel.

“Call and ask about construction!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

My husband and I just stayed at the Seaside Cabanas last week for the last 3 nights of our honeymoon. The entire trip leading up to this stay was an adventure, so we were looking forward to 3 full days of complete relaxation. Boy were we disappointed!

We weren't informed prior to staying that there would be lots of construction going on - otherwise we probably would've rebooked somewhere else. It looks like they're working on a new room, so there were power saws and drills being used often, and lots of hammering. The noise was terrible on top of our rooftop terrace, and even worse inside our room - it sounded like they were drilling into the wall outside of our cabana. We went to the front desk on our first day to see how long they might be doing construction - we thought we might cancel and go stay somewhere else if it was going to be ongoing. We got to talk to someone who said he was the manager, who was very apologetic and said that they were doing the work because something had been overlooked the day before. Ok, great we thought - this will wrap up and we'll have a couple quiet days of relaxing.

Alas, the construction continued the entire duration of our stay. To their credit, the workers did keep the door next to our terrace closed so it muffled some of the noise, but it still was very obnoxious. The icing on the cake was the 3rd day we were there, when we got back from lunch and had no electricity in our room for several hours.

If the construction is complete, this place would be really nice - we just really didn't appreciate the way it was handled.

A couple other comments:
-The showers are warm, at best. I didn't really get a "hot" shower the whole time we were there, even if the water ran for 5 minutes beforehand.
-The rooms are really dark inside - luckily the weather was good so we spent all our time on our rooftop
-There aren't any coffee pots in the rooms, and the coffee isn't available in the bar until 8am. Boy was that hard for my husband. :)
-You really can't get a better location

Room Tip: Cabanas 1 and 2 are nearest to the beach. Cabana 4 is right by the construction.

Hello,
Thank you for your feedback.
All we can do is apologise earnestly for the noise you suffered.
Our contractor has let us down in a big way and run over completion date on our new honeymoon suite by 6 weeks!
Sadly one of the drawbacks being on a tiny island is the choice of builders is also tiny. He had his last shipment of tiles stuck in customs for several weeks also which made matters worse.

None of this makes up for your experience (especially on your honeymoon) I know and I would very much like you to contact me via the email I have pm'd to you, so we can perhaps make this up to you on your next visit.
Warm Regards
Seaside Cabanas

Seaside Cabanas was great. The room was comfortable and kept very clean. We used the fridge to keep yogurt to supplement the good fruit and pastries for breakfast. The staff was very helpful in so many ways. We did not have one of the cabana rooms, but we didn't miss it because were on the upper floor with a great view and a small porch. The pool area is a real plus. There are cheaper hotels without pools on Caye Caulker, but the pool provides a natural social scene, especially in the afternoon when people return from diving, snorkeling, and other trips. The snorkeling and kayaking are both great on Caye Caulker, and we had a lot of good food there. There was construction going on to create a new suite, but it wasn't really a problem for us, and the new room looks as though it will be very nice when finished. And of course the location is perfect.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors have better views and are lighter. Try for room 14 if you are not going t...
