De Real Macaw is north of the water-taxi along Front Street (actually a sand path, no shoes necessary) which is the part of the Caye that we liked most because it is closer to "the split". The water at the split is turquoise and has a great wood-shack bar with tables in the water. A great place to relax and watch the sunset. The public beach is up there too. South of the water-taxi there are nice places to stay, but the water has sea-grass and is murky.
We stayed in the lower cabana. Has a hammock, fan in room, a deck with chair, clothes line for laundry, a drawer with a lock for your use and nice big bathroom. Room was cleaned and sheets changed each day. There is a nice community court with deck chairs that is home to three very cute dogs and a couple cats. $56 US a night.
Very nice staff that will help you with anything and answer all questions.
Tips
Music played late at the restuarant next door, but only on Friday night.
The stars are amazing - go out and lay on one of the docks and take advantage of that view
The sun will burn you - we used sunscreen, but not enough (warning to people from colder climates)
Lobster dinners $12 US at the Rainbow
Recommendations for Caye Caulker
1. Street Food! Hand 2 Mouth Shack across from De Real Macaw. Full Belizean Breakfast. Da Budget Man for lunch / dinner. He'll be right on Front Street near De Real Macaw.
Mr. Sweets for a snack. You can't miss him and his cart of treats. And The Pie Lady for late night dessert. She'll be with her cart, again around De Real Macaw.
2. All tour companies do the same thing for snorkeling. It is great. Should be $80-90 Belize bucks for full day and include lunch, water and Rhum Punch.
3. Go Slow is the motto of the Caye Caulker. If you need to be pampered or need to use credit card everywhere - go to Ambergris Caye. If you want to chill, go to Caye Caulker.
Caye Caulker is paradise - don't spoil it.
Room Tip: Seaview rooms are at the front and cabanas are behind. I wouldn't pay more for the seaview becau...
