“best of the best”

This place is everything it promises to be: perfect location, clean, charming atmosphere and decor, quiet after 11 PM, friendly and safe. I cant recommend it too highly. The former owners (former name Tina's Backpackers Hostel) may have had bedbugs but Yuma's definitely does NOT have bedbugs! No matter how hot it is, Yuma's has plenty of shade, a cool breeze and great hammocks.

“One of the best hostels I've ever stayed at!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Yuma's House is a cool, colorful, funky hostel, the likes of which you rarely see! Susanne and the rest of the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and always there for you. The place is nice and clean. While it's true that Susanne runs a tight ship, it does help maintain a great vibe and a respectful atmosphere. If you want to booze and enjoy yourself, the night life is never more than a few minutes away. The place is quite secure and they have their own security guard at night.

Even better, you simply cannot beat the location. It's right on the beach! Yuma's House has its own dock with a set of hammocks. There are more swings and hammocks in the yard overlooking the waterfront. You are less than a minute away from both the San Pedro Express and the Water Taxi docks, which makes it easy to get there. All the restaurants, bars, and everything else you'll want to see and do is within walking distance.

I had a nice private room with a fan, all for just 28$ a night. Given the location and the quality of the hostel, you simply cannot beat this value. You definitely get more bang for your buck at Yuma's. There are two kitchens for those who wish to self-cater and prepare their own meals.

I've spent six nights in Caye Caulker and I'd definitely return to Yuma's in a heartbeat. The friendly and laid-back vibe was awesome. I've been to 46 countries and well over a hundred hostels, and Yuma's House ranks among the very best of them. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and wish I could be there still!

Keep up the great work! =)

“Best place to stay on Caye Caulker!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

I stayed here for 4 nights earlier this month and had a great time. The rooms and bathrooms were always extremely clean, and the owner was very accomodating. Perfect view, right on the water, nice hammocks to relax at, free wifi, and a really cute dog! Definitely will go back. Book in advance!

“Great value, great hostess.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

I stayed with a couple of friends at Yumas. It is a wonderful  hostel. I have stayed in about a dozen hostels in the last couple of years; this was the CLEANEST hostel I have stayed in.

The hostel is a bit different from most of the others I have stayed in. Guests are likely to be more studious than in other hostels. You will see them sitting around reading or playing Scrabble and adhering to the "be quiet after 11pm" notice. If you want to go out and enjoy the nightlife it is not far away. If you want to stay in a noisy type of "party hostel" then you really do need to go elsewhere.

The owner, Suzanne, is a marvellous and very accommodating hostess. Our personal experiences showed her to be articulate and really determined to make everyone's stay at Yuma's as good as possible. For example when a better room became available after a couple of nights Suzanne offered it to us. The same thing happened to another guest I spoke to was given the same offer.

LOCATION this could simply not be bettered. It is on the east facing coast, right next to the seashore. There is a pontoon right in front with hammocks on it that are under a gazebo thing - one can flourish, like a real Belizean, in the shade. It is a stones throw, across the island's basketball court, from the busy main street, where there are loads of eateries and shops to choose from.

GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY - Definitely; just bear in mind this is a hostel with communal showers and toilets.

AGAIN - I would have no hesitation in staying at Yumas should I go to Caye Caulker again.

Room Tip: I guess you could email early and ask for one of the bigger rooms.

Dear Charlie,

Since it's always easier to complain than praise I really do appreciate when you let me know that we are getting it right. Many thanks for the kind words.
Hope you have many more opportunities to flourish in the shade under the beautiful palm trees here in Caye Caulker.

Best,
Susanne

“Good stay overall, a few little quirks”

My friend and I stayed at Yuma's Hostel for two nights. While it's true that there are strict hostel policies, I think it keeps the place quiet and clean. Pros - The location is right on the beach, easily accessible to everything (though to be fair, Caye Caulker is super small and everything is accessible!). It has a kitchen, with a stove, which is great and actually rare from what I found of other budget accommodations in Belize. The showers were also really good. The water wasn't hot, but it wasn't freezing and the pressure was amazing and everything was kept very clean. I saw the helpers cleaning the bathrooms a few times a day.

Cons - While our room was totally fine in terms of size, there was NO LIGHT in our room. The light we had was this odd red mood lighting orb that didn't give us any ability to see. The natural light in the morning helped, but by noon the sun was beyond our window and we were stuck with the terrible red light. Also, the mattresses are thin futons that could probably stand to be replaced. They were a little uncomfortable.

But all told, I'd stay there again as the price was right and it was super convenient.
