“Great place to relax with amazing ocean views.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2010

We stayed at Shirley's place for two nights. The rooms are clean, with hot water, a small fridge and a fan which we didn't even use. There are only a few cabins located at a good distance from each other. The common area has chairs under palm trees with great ocean views. If you are an early bird you can enjoy an amazing sunrise from the patio.
The owner, Shirley is even more amazing. She is the kind of person you find once in a lifetime. Listening to her stories was a great pleasure. I wish I had more time to stay.
I will return to that magical place.

“A wonderfully peaceful and relaxing place to stay in Caye Caulker.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shirley's. It's located in a peaceful part of the island and is a fantastic place to chill out. Shirley was extremely kind and helpful. She gave fabulous advice about which trips to do and places to eat. The cabins were cozy and comfortable. We had our room made up every day and were given fresh towels daily, which was great.

“Great place to recharge”

Our recent stay at Shirley's was wonderful. Having researched the island, we were able to walk directly to Shirley's right off the water taxi. It was a bit of a hike but worth it to us to be away from the village. The rooms are clean and basic. The hot water is well worth the wait. (It takes several minutes for it to reach you.) We had a seaside room that caught a nice breeze, keeping us cool and bug-free.

Shirley was a great hostess and has fabulous stories to tell. She often took time to stop and chat with us, offering recommendations for food and activities on the island. She's lived there for 40 years so is very knowledgeable about the history of the island but also knows the latest happenings. And she knows how to wield a machete to open a coconut.

If you're looking for a quaint, quiet place to relax and recharge your batteries, Shirley's is the place.

“Rules, rules, rules!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2010

When we first arrived at Shirley's Guest House and saw the room, my friend and I were impressed with how quiet it was, the cleanliness of the rooms was acceptable, and we were so weary from checking out room after room that we decided it would be a relief to just pay and set down our bags so we could explore the island. But after getting settled in our rooms, we noticed at least 7 different signs posted throughout the cabin informing us to do this and not to do that. My favorite was the one where she instructed us to 'wet down, turn off the (shower) water, lather up, and turn the water back on to rinse'. Not exactly the relaxed vibe I was hoping for. I feel badly dissing her place because Shirley seemed like a nice woman, but honestly it did feel a bit restrictive. What her place needs is a makeover. Anyone out there producing a tropical guest cabin makeover show???? The positives include a quiet environment, a clean room, and close to the airport (walking distance). The negatives: No swimming access, total gated atmosphere, not a fun, lively crowd, no interatcion with other guests, too many rules, slightly outdated look and feel of rooms/bathrooms, far from town, long bikeride (full of potholes) to/from town.

“Mistake”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2010 via mobile

Seemed like the perfect spot to have a quiet vacation, but it turned out to be a nightmare. The owner, Shirley, will wake you up every morning so she can clean your room (what's a vacation without some long sleeps?!) This was especially uncomfortable because she will open your room's door while you're sleeping. I advice you to ask for the strict list of rules before paying, she makes you feel like you're going to prison instead of vacation. The worst was the last day that she called us a taxi at checkout time so we would leave quickly!!! I thought I was paranoid until I read the other review talking about her.
