What you need to know:
Negative
- The resort is either sold or is just about to be; God knows what it will be like under new owners
- It is not possible to go anywhere past sunset. They are reluctant to operate the boats and it is prohibitively expensive to have someone bring you back if you want a night elsewhere. You are stuck at the resort.
- The only amenities are one catamaran and two kayaks; better hope the resort is not fully booked
- The tap water is brackish; you will shower in salty water, all week
- There are half walls for privacy for the shower/toilet in the single room cabinas; if you didn’t know your travel partner before you left, you will after
- The mattresses are not exactly in their best condition
- The hotel staff, although nice people, are lacking direction
- Sea grass prevents any swimming off the beach
- There was a jellyfish bloom (watch those stingers)
- If there is no wind, the sand flies may very well eat you alive (I think this has something to do with the proximity of the mangrove swamp behind the resort)
Positive
- The staff are really nice
- The other guests at the resort were great and really made the trip
- The reef is quite interesting and it is close
- You will be forced to chill out because once you are there, there is little you can do
- It is very “rustic”, if you know what I mean
I wouldn’t have minded if Salamander was fair value; pay for what you get. But there is far better value elsewhere. Before you take as read the positive reviews (which seem a bit too, who are these people?), I would let whomever owns Salamander prove themselves before committing your hard earned money and, more important, time to a vacation here.
