“FRIENDLIEST PLACE ON EARTH!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Our first trip to Belize, and we couldn't have had a better experience at any US five-star hotel. I've never been so relaxed, with a "front-row seat" on the beach of the Caribbean on this gorgeous island. Every staff member, from managers Kelly & Paul to resident kitty "Janie", made sure each guest felt at home and provided unbeatable service. So friendly, in fact, that it's hard not to feel that other guests at this resort are just great new neighbors (since everyone is so happy!). If you're looking for an expensive, stuffy place with chandeliers, this ain't it - and that's a great thing for those of us who want a real vacation. We'll be back as soon as we can.

“What a relaxing wonderful vacation!!”

We came down to Ambergris Caye for the first time for singer/songwriter Kelly McGuire's annual Birthday Bash in Belize. His recommendation of the Exotic Caye Beach Resort was right on!
What a wonderful magical place. The staff:Kelly, Paul, Matt, Irene & Thomas are all so friendly and helpful. This is the real Ambergris Caye--not some pretentious condo development. It's right on the beach and was great to wake up and have coffee on the balcony overlooking the green grounds, beach, and beautiful water! There is a pool and while it is small it sure feels great after lying in the sun for several hours! If you want a big pool--you can walk a few blocks to the fitness center that has a large pool, tennis courts. Complimentary to Exotic Caye guests. While there have their great Panini sandwiches from the Snack Shack and say hi to Rob!! One evening he even delivered Panini sandwiches to us.

Restaurants: Ms Sara's, Blue Iguana, and Crazy Cannuck's Beach Bar right on the property.

Be sure to go to Ms. Sara's for breakfast/lunch--don't miss her fantastic cooking and great coffee (Paul her husband roasts it himself). One day we asked if they had any fish for lunch--Paul said sorry no fish but. I have gotten you lobster--fresh grilled Carribean lobster tails--yummy!!!

Crazy Cannucks Beach bar is a blast--could spend hours there listening and talking to the locals (mostly Americans) and having a few (!!!) Belikin beers. They have music many nights.

The restaurant Blue Iguana was also very good. Be sure to be there for their Sunday BBQ. They set up a grill on the beach. We had a NY strip steak and 2 grilled lobster tails for under $30 US!!!

I know many people rent golf carts--but we just used taxis to get into San Pedro. No point in just having the golf cart sit there if all you are doing is relaxing on the beach or going to the reef.

Don't miss going to the reef for the beautiful coral and fish. There is a outfit right on the dock and the staff at Exoctic Caye will book you any kind of trip you want.

We went into town several times to see Kelly McGuire sing at Fidos and walk around a bit. But there is everything you need right at or near Exoctic Caye. The reef is only about a 15-20 minute boat trip away. For us it was about relaxation. Basically you can do as little or as much as you want to.

Tips:
1. When you are quoted in dollars by locals( Taxi drivers etc) it is BZ dollars not US. It should only be $10 BZ (which is $5 US) to go into town
2. You can charge any of the meals and drinks from Blue Iguana and Sara's Kitchen to your room. You can also charge any excursions to your room.
3. The grocery store across the street carries everything you need but I'd bring snacks (cookies, chips, pretzels) as these are expensive as they are imported from US. Also watch out for them being stale. We bough a bag of chips that was outdated and actually rancid and when we tried to take it back they would not give us our money back--only exchange it for other items.
4. Get some fresh fruit-the fruit stand Maria's is just a little bit down toward town and we picked up some great pineapple and bananas.
5. Eat a lot of the fresh fish and lobster (season is June to Feb)

We're planning on going back in November. Wouldn't think of staying any place else but Exotic Caye Beach Resort!

Room Tip: We stayed in 5-C a standard 1 bedroom which had a full kitchen with stove/oven, refrigerator, micro...

“The Staff and Team Make Your Stay Magical”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We had never been to Belize before and I have to say that we had the most wonderful experience! We have traveled to many various places in the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, Venezuela and we definitely had the very best treatment that we received at any place that we have stayed. Kelly, Paul, Irene, Ben and Mate are the greatest people who truly care and take care of their customers who visit this nice establishment right on the beach! We stayed at the Resort for 6 days.

Ms. Sara's Kitchen is a great breakfast place with homemade Habanero hot sauce that will tingle your tongue when you eat it on your eggs. And the later effects that you experience truly expresses the hotness of the Habanero peppers.

I don't have one complaint about the one bedroom apartment right on the beach with a beautiful view of the sea day and night. The pool looks small, but believe me when you are hot, it is very refreshing; and we took dips regularly during the day.

This is not a five star hotel, but that is what I really liked about the property. I like the rustic feel and look and would not go back it they develop the property into an American type pristine structure. I would love to return one day to hopefully see the same beautiful establishment with the same smiling faces.

We used the kitchen to cook and they have everything that you need for cooking your own meals and cleaning up.

We rented a golf cart for one week for $225 U.S. and drove around the island (which is right across the street). I highly recommend renting a golf cart to get around and we had a blast! Had dinner at Elvi's on a Friday for a Mayan feast that was unique and awesome. Ate Lobster, Grouper and Coconut Prawns at the Blue Water Grill which was fabulous. Bought some Lobster ($12 U.S. a pound at Green Grocery store downtown) which we grilled right on the beach and ate in our apartment like hotel room.

We saw seahorses, needle fish, angel fish, jacks, snapper and other fish right on the dock which is a great swimming area. The water is so clear one does not even need a snorkel mask.

We flew over from Belize City on Tropic Air ($150 U.S. for two of us) and returned via water tax ($30 U.S. for two). Then we went the the Maruba Resort and Spa in the jungle for 4 days.

Bring your own Budweiser because they only have Belikin Beer which we purchased from the distributor on the way into town, which is one-half of what you would pay in the store.

If you have any questions during your stay ask Ben and Mate (the maintenance men) and they will tell you everything you need or want to know about Ambergris Caye!

Thank you Staff at Exotic Caye for a wonderful experience!

“I'm not laid back, but was here!”

It takes a pretty magical place to calm me down, as vacations are usually planned with non-stop activities. Not here. I found myself looking forward to spending time on the porch or under one of the beach thatch covers, hypnotized by the sea view, breeze, and the great beach at Exotic Caye. Having light conversations with caretakers, Ben and Maitlund, became the highlight of my day. There were plenty of activities, but none were more enjoyable than the relaxation. It's old, but the staff made it one of the most enjoyable places we have ever stayed. The restaurant was very good, wireless internet and tv worked well, and it is easy to get into town. Our group of travelers is already planning a return trip.

“laid back charm, with apartments right on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

When you open your apt. door and step off your private porch you are on the beach, which is much nicer here than in town. It's about a 10-15 minute walk into San Pedro. The apts have a full kitchen and small sitting area and you get wifi and great U.S. tv. The apts are very basic and old but clean and the whole place has a laid back old time charm to it. The staff is great and give very personal service. The pool is a small plunge pool and as elsewhere on Ambergris you can't swim off the beach because of the sea grass. There is a good restaurant on the premises and there's a well stocked supermarket nearby.
