I stayed at the Sundiver for 10 days with my spouse and 4-year old daughter in January, and was disappointed after reading such glowing reviews. We had a suite upstairs and the view was wonderful, as all the rooms face the water. Our room was clean and the hotel staff were very friendly and professional. Overall the food was good. The resort is quite isolated, which is good and bad. My husband enjoyed sitting on the beach reading, but there is not much else to do at the resort. We went diving, snorkeling, and made several other trips to the mainland and San Pedro.
Their pool was out of service (dark green, cloudy water), which was a disappointment to my daughter. Their small beach had broken glass and lots of grass, but seemed as clean as most other resort beaches there. Upon arrival the manager told me that it was safe to swim in the pool and encouraged me to do so, but one of the other staff told us to avoid the pool and had posted a warning sign. That was my first clue.
There are several pets that stay at the hotel - two dogs and a cat. We are animal lovers, but did not like to see the cat wandering in and out of the restaurant. On our first day one of the dogs jumped on my daughter and sliced a deep, 2-inch cut on her thigh. She was hysterical, screaming and crying in pain while my husband was trying to get the dog off of her. Management and staff just stood silent watching. My husband asked for help calling the dog off, and eventually one of the staff did. They did call for the dog, but no one rushed over to help pull her off of my daughter. Amazingly, they never even asked if she was okay, or said that they were sorry it happened. They didn't put the dog up either, and so for the 10 long days we were there we were all anxious about that stupid dog jumping on her again. Poor kid was stressed out every time we were out on the beach.
Besides the dog, the other major complaint was the drinking and absolute foul-mouthed language from management, which we found to be very unprofessional and offensive. One afternoon we were about the only ones at the beach cabana and I ordered a drink for my daughter. One of the owners came and sat down, and I was dumbfounded by his reaction to the following situation. A fairly young boy, maybe 10-11 years old, was bicycling on the beach when the 2 dogs began chasing him and barking wildly. He was terrified and crashed his bike, and he was crying and stumbling as he tried to get on his feet and get away from the dogs. I gasped and the management's very young son called the dogs off. The owner's reaction was to laugh and say, "I bet that guy feels like a (female anatomy) when a 4-year-old has to call off the dogs!" My daughter was 3 feet from him when he said that, but that sort of foul language and drunken disregard for others was the norm.
The managment made us so uncomfortable, but we were determined to have a good time. We spent a lot of time off the island and also went into San Pedro. The excursions (trips to the Mayan ruins, cave tubing, etc.) were the highlights of our trip but were also very expensive. Many of the people we met there at the resort were nice, but I would never recommend this place to anyone. Overall it was a total disappointment.
