Two weeks ago we were enjoying our last full day at Las Terrazas -- cocktails on the beach, 85 degree temps, and the warm breeze blowing through our hair. Today, as we are back at home in MN, the paradise of Ambergris Caye seems so distant, yet the memories remain so close.
After reading the incredible reviews on TripAdvisor, we decided to book our trip to Belize. We truly had no idea what to expect, other than we knew we would be staying at a "nice place". Nice place was an understatement. We arrived at Las Terrazas expecting to stay in a 1 BR Garden unit. To our surprise, when we got to our room, we were now in a 2 BR unit overlooking the pool with granite countertops, stainless appliances, 3 bathrooms, 2 patios, wireless internet, cable tv, and an extremely comfortable bed!
The staff at the resort was exceptional and very accommodating. Manuel, Maurice and the young lady at the reception desk were so friendly and helpful with advice on excursions, restaurants, and things to do. Chef Alex was incredibly generous and even offered to prepare a meal in our room on the first night of our stay.
This was the first vacation my wife and I have taken without our children in 16 years and we had a blast. Even though we are perfectly content hanging out on the beach or by the pool, we found time for plenty of other activities.
A list of our activities for the week included: renting bikes at the resort and riding them along the beach into San Pedro; renting a golf cart from the resort and taking the road to San Pedro; lunch in San Pedro at Waraguma (good lobster burrito); dinner and drinks at the Palapa Bar (about a 45 minute walk); dinner at Aji (great place for a romantic dinner); lunch at Rojo (fabulous Conch sausage pizza); live music at Fido's; snorkeling, kayaking, zip lining and cave tubing.
If you decide to rent a golf cart to take to San Pedro, know that the only road heading into town is horrible. It is a gravel road that is full of potholes filled with water. You will constantly be slowing down to avoid the potholes, mud and water. If you decide to rent bikes, don't think about taking the road. Ride your bikes on the edge of the beach and head south toward town. San Pedro is 4 miles south of the resort, so it's not a bad ride. If you decide to bike north of the resort, you will have to get off your bike several times to walk it through some sections of very loose sand.
The people of San Pedro were extremely friendly. Take advantage of the water taxi if you would like to head into town to check out the nightlife. We spent two evenings at Fido's listening to their house band. Fido's is located right on the beach and has a great atmosphere. The patrons seemed to be mostly Americans looking to get their rock & roll fix instead of the reggae music that seemed prevalent at most of the other establishments. Before you leave the party in San Pedro, be sure you sample some of the local food vendors selections in the town square while you are waiting to catch the water taxi back to your resort.
For those of you looking to get in a workout at the resort while you are away, there is a small workout room at the resort, but the equipment is limited. There are some dumbbells, a couple of exercise balls, a treadmill, and a couple of bikes. I was excited to see the dumbbells, but there isn't a bench to use which really limits what you can do.
I highly recommend having Mata Grande deliver a few groceries to your unit before your arrival so you can utilize the kitchen in your unit. Before we arrived, I was concerned about where I would be able to buy a case or two of beer. When you arrive at the airport in San Pedro, a van from the resort will pick you up and take you to the area where you will board the boat. Just before you make your last turn to get to the boat, there is a liquor store (Kmart) where you can have the driver stop and pick up your beer and cocktails.
We had an incredible time in Belize, but if you are looking for the typical Caribbean vacation where you can walk from the beautiful beach right into the water, this might not be the place for you. Due to the barrier reef running so closely along the island, there is an abundance of sea grass in the water. If you like to swim, there is a small roped off area at the end of the dock that has a sandy bottom. I didn't see too many areas along the beach where anyone would walk right into the water.
On the flip side, the barrier reef also provides some incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities. My wife and I aren't experienced snorkelers, but we loved the snorkel trip to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley! One last recommendation -- if you decide to snorkel, wear a shirt or some thicker sunscreen on your back. My only regret of the entire trip was frying my back while snorkeling. SPF 8 didn't quite do the trick!
Thank you to everyone at Las Terrazas Resort for helping us create some incredible memories on a truly wonderful vacation!!!
