“Relaxing, great view, no frills”

This hotel had what I wanted, quiet, sun decks, view, flowers and budget price. ( $75 mid week.)
What I hadn't expected was there was NO shuttle, as advertised, and the uphill walk was an exausting 25 minutes. They do offer a free shuttle to and from the boat upon arrivel and departure, but NONE to get to Avalon for meals, activities, shopping, and a cab was $10 each way and I was staying three nights. The breakfast consisted of toast, coffee, tea period, and a common frig, microwave and TV. My heart fell when I arrived at the dingy room but the sun came out and I was able to spend all of my time on the two decks reading and sunning which is mainly what I had come for. I didn't find the staff very helpful or motivated but all in all for the price and spectacular view I would stay again.

Room Tip: I had "The Purple Sage" room facing the water and it did have a great view. Ask ahead if t...

“sweet little hotel with a great view”

sure, the hotel is small, the rooms are tiny and old - but the views are all worth it! compared to the other expensive hotels "downtown" this is a little jewel. you have a terrasse, pool, enough space to relax outdoors. also fridge, coffee making facilities, microwave, so no problem to be self-sustaining. would go there again next time!

Room Tip: ocean view!

“Old California History with A View to Die For...”

What an amazing place! The view from the hill top overlooking the Pacific, Avalon and LA is incredible. This is where Zane Grey lived and so it appeals to visitors who want to step back in time and relive California before it was over developed. A great place to relax and unwind...Close enough to Avalon to enjoy all it has to offer but far enough away to feel secluded away from the tourists and day trips from LA. Enjoy!

“Unkept, unloved Zane Gray Pueblo Hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

My husband, 9-yr old grandson and myself stayed at the Zane Gray in August 2011. At first glance, the hotel was quaint, private and had an old-world feel. Old is the optimal word. Our room, the Sunset Pass, although affording a nice view of the hills, had carpet that was filthy and covered with black stains - it looked as though oil had been dripped all over. The shower drain needed repair and the toilet was broken. Since our trip was about visiting the island, we chose to not focus on the condition of the room. I would like to say that the most troubling aspect of our stay at the Zane Gray was the angry, unprofessional and unfriendly manager. After only 10 minutes upon arriving, he was yelling at a nice young mom and her 2 young boys playing in the pool. They were adorable and well behaved - yet he was complaining about them making too much noise - and they absolutely were not. When she responded that they were being quiet he yelled more about the fact that it is a quiet establishment and she had been warned. If anyone was affecting the peace and quiet, it was him. I was shocked by his behavior and it really set a bad tone that continued through the week. I do not recommend the Zane Gray...we will return to Catalina, for sure, but never to the Zane Gray!

Room Tip: Try a hotel with professional, helpful management!
