My 16-year-old son and I stayed at the Candy Cane Inn on March 28th, 2012. We'd read the reviews, and the place sounded great, but my son was a bit worried nonetheless, probably because of the name.
Check-in was speedy and we were told we'd been upgraded to a premium room, which included breakfast delivery. We thanked the clerk, but I was thinking, it was probably a last-minute thing, when they ran out of regular rooms. When we checked in, I asked if we could leave the car there all day the next day, as we'd be in the park until late. He said it wouldn't be a problem.
The room was on the 2nd floor at the very back of this long, narrow property. We had no problem with finding a parking space right by the room. There was no elevator, so we lugged our stuff up the stairs.
The room was nice (not spectacular, but nice). It turned out that a premium room had several benefits: a nice big popcorn tub with a welcome letter in it (personalized - which meant that the upgrade wasn't a last-minute thing) and plenty of snacks (microwave popcorn, fresh-baked cookies, packaged snacks). (Note: my son was delighted as soon as he found the snacks, and found out that the room also came with one free DVD rental.) And breakfast would be delivered (you filled out a form and tied it to the doorknob), which saved us going down to what looked like a very crowded continental-breakfast-buffet experience. There was also one other benefit which I didn't realize right away - a 2:00 pm checkout time.
There were a couple of bottles of water, plus actual little thingies of creamer, in the fridge. No idea if they do that in every room, but it was a nice touch.
My son had a swim, then got a DVD to watch while munching popcorn.
We slept well; the noise level wasn't bad at all. Breakfast arrived in a huge basket, with everything we asked for.
We were a little too late for the 7:30 shuttle to the park, so we walked; it took about ten minutes. We rode some stuff together, then I went back to the hotel to take a nap and finish our packing while my son had some time on his own at Disneyland. I could never have gone back for that nap without the late check-out!
When I was back at the hotel in the middle of the day, I had a better look at the property. It is very well-maintained, including a lot of landscaping (the place employs two full-time landscapers). I noticed that the shuttle driver was polishing his bus in between runs; it was sparkling clean. I spoke with that driver some on the way back to the park; he was very nice, and he said most of the employees had been there for years; to me, that is a good sign that it's well-run.
We stayed in the park until around 8:00, then walked back to the hotel to pick up the car. It was sure convenient to be able to leave it there all day.
We'd be delighted to stay here again.
The premium rooms come with enough extras that they are probably worth the money.
