“3 Cs: clean competent convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

A nice alternative to a major chain. It works, it's clean, it's close to everything, it feels cosy and it's good value, especially for couples and family.
I went for business but it would be great for a family trip. Two types of suite - separate bedroom and all-in one with a full size kitchen. Small but friendly restaurant downstairs with a good breakfast. It's a bit dated but it's clean and comfortable. The spaces are well designed so the rooms feel spacious. Ask for higher floor rooms - the Ist floor at the back gets some machine noise (I was fine but one of our party switched).
Staff are very friendly and helpful. There is a fitness centre.
Location is great on the edge of GW University, Foggy Bottom and Georgetown. Easy stroll to the World Bank and the beginning of the Mall. There are several restaurants nearby and a Trader Joe's.
Rooms are discounted on the hotel site and Priceline. For a couple there is a deal including breakfast

Room Tip: Ask to face the street or a higher floor at the back

Thank you for the positive review and compliments with regards to your three C’s. We work hard to ensure our guests feel that way every time they stay with us. We are thrilled you found our hotel well suited for your needs, and that you were able to enjoy our different amenities. While we are located in a very quiet area and rarely get any noise complaints, we are sorry some in your party were inconvenienced by the noise in the back of the building. Please extend our apologies.

“Good locate midway between Georgetown and the Mall, friendly service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Brilliant location, we spent some lovely days in Georgetown which is easy walking distance .... Got the tube to the smithsonion museums ... Very large rooms, a little dated but comfortable, the wee fitness room also came in handy, would stay there again although I did feel it was probably too expensive

We are thrilled you found our location ideal for your needs. Georgetown is a great place to spend time in; we hope you were able to enjoy some great cuisines from the many restaurants in that area. We hope you are able to visit us again the next time you visit DC.

“Not luxurious, but very clean, convenient and competent.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

I think that most of the other reviews are pretty accurate. Your satisfaction will likely be related directly to your expectations. I would put this on par with a Marriott Residence Inn, except it has more of a boutique or independent feel to it.

The king bed was very comfortable, but those who had to sleep in the living room weren't quite as happy (although no major complaints). Overall, I felt that the property was clean and well maintained. It's nestled in a very quaint and quiet neighborhood that felt extremely safe. There are several restaurants within walking distance (assuming you are able to walk 3 city blocks or more), and most of them are casual. We ate at Thai and Cajun eateries that were pretty good. Also a kabob joint that had decent food but some sketchy looking customers/employees. The inhouse restaurant was good, but it was a bit small and a little pricey. Don't plan to buy large quantities of food at Trader Joe's unless you have a car, because it is a pretty long walk for someone carrying a lot of baggage. As has been noted, the subway and GWU are about 2-3 city blocks away. There is a convenience store about a block or two away too. You can walk safely to the Lincoln Monument from this hotel at night, but it is quite a hike, so you'd better be in shape. That walk takes you right past the State Department. We didn't have a car, so I can't comment on parking. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful; I suspect that this might be a family operation. They have bikes that you can use, but we didn't do this. Nor did I use the exercise room (got enough of that walking). We had a nice flatscreen TV that worked well (pay per view was very expensive, so we didn't use). No tobacco odors (or other unwanted smells) noted.

This hotel is an exceptional value. I would definitely go back again (as long as I don't have to sleep in the living room).

Thank you for your feedback with regards to our rooms and our staffing. While we are not a family operation, most of our staff members have been here for years and have a familial bond with one another. We are happy you were able to get around the city on foot. While we are not in the middle of the city, we find our location to be perfect for guests that don’t always prefer the hustle and bustle of DC, yet are able to get around the city without the necessity of a vehicle. We are looking forward to your next visit.

“OK...but a bit tired.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

The River Inn is fine if you set your expectations to a barely 3 star hotel. The location is ok (near the Kennedy Center and Georgetown), the staff is friendly (if not a bit inept) and the price is right. The big sticking point is the room itself. They are like studio apartments (full kitchen included) that need a renovation. The leather (naugahyde?) headboards are peeling and worn, the lighting is minimal and the rooms are in need of better lighting. Also, little things get annoying after the first day (no ramp to the front door so you bump your bags down the steps, the elevator can be painfully slow, the wifi is spotty, the business/fitness center is a joke).

Would I stay here again? Probably, since options are limited in this area. Do I love it? No, not really.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear the hotel did not meet your expectations. We are a little surprised you found our location as just ok, as most of our guests speak highly of our location here in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. We apologize if the room did not meet your expectations as well. Indeed, we understand some of our furnishings require attention and are in the process of correcting these issues. We hope you give us another chance when you return to Washington DC.

“Reasonable, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

Reasonably priced hotel near Foggy Bottom/George Washington University. Free internet access. Only drawback is that restaurant appears to be frequently booked for private parties (2 out of 3 nights while I was there), leaving no in-hotel alternative other than room service or walks to mediocre restaurants 2-3 blocks away. Parking is valet only.

Room Tip: Jr. Suites can be good value

We are sorry to hear you were unable to experience our in-house restaurant, Dish. Since we are in close proximity to the Kennedy Center, Dish is often booked with pre-show dinner guests, especially when a popular show is playing. However it is rare that it becomes completely booked. We hope this does not deter you from returning to us.
