The Omni Shoreham is a huge hotel (nearly 900 rooms). Because there is a height restriction on buildings in our nation's capital it sprawls out along a ridge above Rock Creek Park. Many of the rooms overlook the park and have views of the Washington Monument and the higher buildings of Alexandria on the horizon. It is an older hotel, so the rooms are quite spacious. Ours (#893) had a large walk-in closet and an anteroom outside of the bathroom. The bathroom was quite small and there us a window over the tub-shower that makes the room quite cold on wintry days. We also had a small balcony with a nice view over a very nice residential area to the park and the city beyond.
The hotel is located just a block from the Woodley Park-Zoo entrance to the Washington Metro which makes it very convenient for zipping around the city. Unfortunately, while we were there one track on the Metro was closed for repair each evening. Check with the concierge or the Metro site on the internet to find out if there will be service disruptions during your stay.
We stayed over a weekend (when the hotel was not too busy) and on into the following week (when it was packed). Both the room service and the 'high speed' internet service suffered as the place filled up. On the Friday evening we checked in the doorman asked for our name and brought us our room assignment and key from the front desk. After that he continued to call us by name each time we went in or out through the front door. Because we are part of the hotel's frequent traveler program the internet was free, but regular guests pay $9.95 per day. By Monday when the hotel was full the internet service was so slow that it took nearly a half hour to send a single e-mail with one two-page document attached. We would have been outraged if we'd been paying for the service. Instead we were merely frustrated. On Sunday, I asked housekeeping for two additional bottles of body lotion. Instead we got several small bottles of hair conditioner and shampoo.
We had room service one evening. The meal arrived promptly when they said it would and the food was very good. Unfortunately, the deliverer failed to inform us that there was a tip included in the bill, so we gave her an additional generous tip.
Room Tip: Rooms facing the park (odd numbers) on the upper floors (7 or 8) have the best views. Rooms away fr...
