“Very nice hotel - Hyatt quality and service, but mediocre restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

person found this review helpful

This is a very nice hotel - exactly what you would expect from a Hyatt - quality rooms, furnishings, bed, bedding, desk, lighting, TV, bathroom, towels, amenities, etc. Everything was clean and in excellent condition. My room was directly across from a fire station, however it was surprisingly quiet - I could barely hear anything (so nothing to worry about with this!) The shower was extra nice, however there was no tub (if anyone cares). They had nice personal touches, such as personalized wake up calls, rather than a recording. The hotel is a convenient 10 minute walk to Union station. There are very few restaurants within a 5 minute walk of the hotel and the hotel's restaurant is mediocre. The food was generally unhealthy with much more fat (cream, butter, oils, etc) than necessary. Other than the average restaurant and lack of many nearby restaurants, this was a perfect hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not overlooking the fire station, however it is very quiet, so this is not too import...

Dear Flintstone1234,

We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and appreciate the time you have taken to leave your review. I am glad to hear you were not inconvenienced by the fire house view! They do try to take our guests into consideration when going out on calls. I am sorry you were dissatisfied with the restaurant and have passed your comments along to our Chef. Many of the dishes are quite rich, however we do have a few Stay Fit items on our menus for all meal periods that you may want to try should you make a return visit. We hope to welcome you back again!

Sincerely,

Jennifer, Guest Relations Manager

“Great Location for visiting the Capitol Building & Mall”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

This is a pretty average hotel all the way around. It is clean and the rooms are fairly comfortable. You want to stay here if it's important to be in walking distance to the Capitol and the mall.
The Sunday brunch is a bit pricey but it's not easy to find a place to eat in the neighborhood on a Sunday morning.
One design issue that is a problem for people with luggage is that the front door leads you to a down escalator. Everyone seems to struggle getting their bags up and down the escalator to the check in desk, elevators, etc. You have to wonder who thought it was a good idea to design the front lobby that way.

Dear BreakingNews58,

I appreciate your taking time to share comments about your stay with us. I am disappointed to hear that we didn’t exceed your expectations. I certainly hope you and your family would allow us another opportunity to do just that should you make a return visit to Washington, DC. With regard to your concern about the lobby design, unfortunately when the hotel was built in 1976, the architect wanted to create a welcome of grandeur so that arriving would be welcomed with a bird’s eye view of the hotel’s bustling lobby and all that was taking place within it. Needless to say, we have made many design improvements from the original version, but unfortunately in order to bring the entrance and lobby together would require complete demolition. Of course our Bell Staff are always available to assist guests with their luggage, or they can direct guests to the elevator to the left of our entrance. Thank you again for your time. We truly hope to see you and your family again!

Sincerely,

Jennifer, Guest Relations Manager

“Great location for business”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

This is an excellent choice for a hotel to do business in the DC area - I stay here all the time (20+ nights per year). Easy trip in from Reagan Airport, close to the various Administration departments, walking distance to Capital Hill and the legislative offices, 2 blocks to Union Station - the location cannot be beat. The staff is friendly, the rooms are clean and sizeable. The decor in the rooms is fairly recently updated. The rooms a bit dark for getting work done but are very quiet for sleeping. Not a lot to do in the neighborhood after hours, but there are a couple of good restaurants nearby and Chinatown is a short cab ride. Overall a very good choice - and can get decent rates for DC if you book early.

Room Tip: Ask for the Hyatt Pure room - these rooms are just a little nicer, in my opinion.

“Excellent customer service - Above and beyond!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I was overwhelmed by the customer service at this hotel. All the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The location was very central. A short walk to Union Station made this very convenient for getting around the Capitol Hill area. Surprisingly, my room was directly located across the street from the Fire Dept. I wondered if this might be a deal breaker, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that the sound proofing in this hotel is amazing. On the occasion that the FD went out on a call, you could barely hear the sirens. I would have thought the sound was coming from way across town. - I was traveling on business over the weekend, and discovered that many restaurants in the area were not open when I was free to eat. Not a reflection on the hotel, just an observation that I think might be worth noting. While there I ate at the Art and Soul across the street - Excellent food. Would also recommend the West Wing for sushi and bagels with lox (yes they have a very eclectic offering). Would have loved to try the deli across the street, but they never seemed to be open when I was free to eat.
