“Stop Don't Stay Here!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

I am so confused by the other reviews of this place. We stayed here one night and booked it on a travel site because it said it was near Dupont Circle because we wanted to enjoy some night life there. It is NOT near Dupont Circle. It is a LONG walk uphill into a different neighborhood. It was very cute from the outside but when we started walking to our room the hallway smelled of stale smoke (although they say non smoking). The beds were OLD lumpy mattresses, it has maybe a 19" TV on a pedestal, the heater was old and loud and most of all DIRTY with dust blowing out the vent. The walls were PAPER thin - so much so that we could hear EVERY word from the room next door and our neighbors were literally up ALL night talking and screeching until about 6 a.m. The bathroom had a NEW tub/shower BUT the vent above the shower was disgusting with thick dust balls blowing out of it. The PROS of this place - it WAS in a nice safe neighborhood. It was a short walk to the Adams Morgan neighborhood and we felt safe walking there at night. Last PRO - they offered to check our luggage for the day so we could ride the metro without it. The CONS - EVERYTHING else. If you can afford more - stay in Dupont Circle.

Dear Jaminoe,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding our hotel. I am certainly disappointed that your stay was not all it could have been.

I would like to apologies on behalf of the hotel and its team for your stay. Our standard procedure in the event of noisy neighbors would be to offer you an upgraded room on a different floor. I am sure that the evening/night shift clerk would have gladly done this.

In reference to the stale smell of smoke, we have just (within the last 4 months) designated the hotel as “Non-Smoking”. The housekeeping and maintenance staff have been diligently working, shampooing carpets, washing drapes, etc., to remove all traces and I am sure that by the spring we will have solved this problem completely. Also, I have called your reference to the vents to their attention and they are working to rectify this.

Our Kalorama/DuPont location puts us 5 blocks from the circle. From the hotel, traveling down Connecticut Ave. the typography consists of a rather steep downhill grade leading to a leveling off as one approaches the entertainment district. So far, all we have heard from our guests is that they enjoyed the walk and then took a taxi back to the hotel. I am very sorry if you feel you were misled by our advertising.

Once again please do accept my apologies and I do hope that your next trip to Washington, DC will be far more enjoyable.

“ok basic hotel, bad internet service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

I reserved here 3 nights, but left after first night. It is comfortable enough for a hotel of its level - old but clean. But I was in town looking for apartments so internet access was crucial. I called before booking and the staff specifically promised in-room internet. Sadly, the internet mostly did not work, even after the attendant restarted the router several times. Instead of looking at apartments, I spent time dealing with the hotel's internet. Eventually I left after the attendant refused to deal with the problem further. It was frustrating to have to find another hotel quickly and move. More so because of the contrary promise made.

Found through hotels dot com and will definitely return. Clean room, good price, helpful staff, great location for Dupont Circle or the zoo (walked to both). Don't pass this place up!

“Great hotel for a few nights!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

I stayed here for 3 nights recently after getting a good deal on a bidding website ($100/night). The room was surprisingly large, clean, and comfortable. The wifi was good and strong and the bathroom looked brand new. The only problem was that you can't control the temperature in the room and it got pretty stuffy. Also it's about half a mile from a metro station, which can be a long walk at the end of a hard day. Otherwise, fantastic hotel, especially if you can get it at a discount.

“You unlock this door with the key...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

An actual key, that is. As this was a last minute booking finding any space in or near the Georgetown area of Washington at a reasonable price was something of a minor miracle. The lobby area is in need of remodeling, hopefully in keeping with the dated motif of the property. Looking at the small water stain in the popcorn finish just above the check-in desk one questions one’s choice of lodging.

And then you enter a time warp.

As the desk clerk hands you your room key you realize it’s a key…a REAL key; metal with teeth and an elongated diamond plastic key fob with embossed room number. The hotel is an older property and has been kept clean and well repaired outside of the lobby. The rooms are what one would expect if one remembers travel circa 1975. The only things missing are the “magic fingers,” the shag carpet and the retractable clothesline in the shower (which would have come in handy this trip, but I digress). The hotel does have Wi-Fi on every floor but there is no large flat television waiting for you when get back which is fine since it was unplugged to provide power to the laptop. The bathroom had all new fixtures: tub, sink and commode, including the “sanitized for freshness” paper seal. The breakfast was simple fare: bagels, muffins, coffee and juice.

The proprietors are not running a boutique hotel; they simply are trying to make a living and have a classic property as their business. Many deride the lack of modern amenities due to our national indoctrination of largess. As such this property was a welcome escape from modernity and a reminder of one’s youth when travel was something special.
