“Good for business travellers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

I enjoyed my stay. The room was comfortable and clean. The common areas were comfortable, informal and relaxed. The self-serve breakfast was basic, but sufficient and convenient for busy business travellers. Guests have access to the kitchen, which is nice and not typical of B&Bs. The location was also convenient to downtown yet a great funky residential area with great restaurants. The host John is very nice. Great value for price considering what it costs to stay in a hotel. I would stay again.

Room Tip: I stayed in the front room. Very nice but there is street noise. That didn't bother me but if yo...

“I really liked it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

At the last minute, I needed a place close to the Washington Hilton that was walkable. The U Street fit the bill really well.

This is an area of Washington that takes 6 or so blocks of walking from one of several Metro stops (Green/Yellow) U St. Cardozo, Red (Dupont Circle), but is one of the reasons that the Washington Hilton is a somewhat of a pain). Evidently, perhaps 3/4 of guests are there oh business (so says host John).

Host John was around periodically (he and his partner own the Meridien farther east on U.) and was extremely helpful in "orienting" me to the neighborhood (I have been to Washington many times, just not this area.)

My room was fine - redone - nicely. Remember, this is an older Washingtonian brownstone, and this is not Georgetown! If you are expecting totally upscale Georgetown or late 20th century modern, think again.

Restaurant-wise, an eclectic mix of Tex-Mex, and several others in 18th/U/Florida area. Adams Morgan up towards Woodley Park is some walk, Conn Ave towards DuPont Circle less so.

“Dank. Smelled of Stale Cigarettes and Cat”

I wish I could rate this place more highly. On the plus side: the one of two managers I met was friendly and intent on making me feel at home. Also, the neighborhood was edgy, but not scary, and accessible easily from DuPont Circle and major transport links, a vital asset since the price per room is markedly lower than accommodations just a few blocks closer to DC's cultural, government and business hubs. However, I booked the basement flat and found it clammy, with a penetrating odor of stale ash and damp cat. The refrigerator came in handy, but the microwave was grimy. In fact, the room wasn't serviced during my stay--that I could tell at any rate. With a it of bright decor, a thorough scour and improved ventilation, the place could be redeemed.

Room Tip: Do not choose the basement flat.

“Quaint and communal atmosphere.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

Loved staying at the b&b on U. Both the managers and the guests were very friendly. The accommodations were very comfortable and had a home-like feel. Will come back if I ever return to DC!

Room Tip: Rooms facing U streed have a great view!

It is always difficult to hear a guest did not enjoy their stay; however we are very confused by some of the issues they mention and believe they are not accurate with their description. These guests did not offer any of these observations to us directly, though we checked them in personally and were present at breakfast the next morning. Dupont Circle is considered a downtown neighborhood. The home is located on the northern boundary of Dupont Circle, 17th and U Street NW. We are north of the White House by 1.3 miles (about 12 blocks). For many this is walking distance, or many others, a very short ride on public transportation. We are even closer to the Metro system. There are 2 stations within walking distance, the Green line is .58 miles, and Red line is .74 miles (4 and 7 blocks respectively). Reserved off street parking is available for $15/nt, with taxes $16.80 and is directly behind the house on the footprint of the property. These guests stayed in our second floor, 2 room suite, not an apartment. Both rooms in the suite have their own window air conditioning units, only the bathroom in the suite is not directly air-conditioned. We do feel $238 including taxes and parking for a party of 4, with breakfast is reasonable here in Washington, though we are aware Washington can be an expensive city for lodging, especially compared to many other destinations. Please feel free to contact us should you have any questions about this review or the property.
