We have used the The Washington Suites in Georgetown a couple times now for business travel into Washington D.C. It provides a number of appreciated amenities: Good location, relatively decent rates, large multi-room suites with full sized kitchens, free internet access and a free breakfast.
We arrived at the hotel by car and therein lays our single biggest complaint with the hotel – it is not very accommodating for guests that have a vehicle. The front of the hotel is directly on the extremely busy Pennsylvania Avenue and is situated very close to the equally busy intersections with 25th St and K St. This makes it difficult to stop in front of the hotel and load/unload your bags. Basically, there is a small area that is a little larger than a car-length available for you to pull into. If there is a vehicle already there (taxis have a tendency to sit in the spot sometimes), there is not a chance to stop (there will be traffic behind you and it will be very difficult to just stop in the middle of the traffic), so you will have to circle the block and try again. We unloaded our bags, got them inside and we checked in. This the second biggest gripe we have: Parking is difficult or expensive… or both, if you are unlucky. Basically, you have a choice – you can either pay a hefty valet parking fee or you can try to fend for yourself and try to park on the side of one of the roads near the hotel. The road on the side of the hotel (25th street) does not have meters, so it is ideal for parking, if you can find a spot. The rest of the spots in the area are metered, so your daytime parking will be limited. If you will be away from the hotel for most of the day, this is not such a big deal since you do not have to pay the meter after 7 pm. You should understand, though, that this parking is not an issue limited to this hotel – any hotel in downtown D.C. will have the same issues. Welcome to the big city.
The rooms in the Washington Suites are not “luxury”, but they are definitely practical – especially if you are traveling on business, with a family or need a room for a long period of time. We were staying there for over week, so the Washington Suites were ideal for our purposes. Our suite was a 1-bedroom suite with a full, separate kitchen, a nice large living room with a dining room table, a separate bedroom with a king bed and a bathroom attached to the bedroom. The suite had large flat screen TVs in the living room and the bedroom and the kitchen was fully equipped with all the necessary dishware, pots & pans, and various cookware. The morning breakfast is not elaborate, but it is nice and they usually had some kind of hot item along with the continental offerings.
One of the nice things about the hotel is its location right on the edge of Georgetown. It is just a short walk to the beautiful shops and restaurants of Georgetown and just minutes away from all the main attractions in Washington D.C. One day, we decided to walk down to the Mall – it took about 15+ minutes to get there, but it was an easy shot right down Pennsylvania Avenue to 17th Street, which puts you right at the Washington Monument. From there, most of the monuments and the Smithsonian are easily accessible on foot. We took the metro to get back to the hotel and it is easy to get off at the Foggy Bottom stop and walk up to the hotel. We definitely enjoyed the access to all the restaurants in Georgetown and spent a good deal of time exploring the culinary options in that area.
All-in-all, The Washington Suites is not a 5-Star hotel, but it does not claim to be. It is exactly what they advertise – a very nice place to stay in the heart of D.C. that provides a relatively economical and practical solution to long term requirements. We definitely recommend it for business travel or for people vacationing with families that require the benefits of a furnished apartment.
Room Tip: ask for a corner suite on the first floor - these are more accessible and, if you park on 25th Stree...
