The St. Gregory is billed as a four star hotel, and it is certainly not a four star hotel. If it had been rated as 3 stars, I would have given this an average rating. The appointments are clean but extremely old, filled with tired furniture and aging appointments from the early 80's. The hotel itself is rather security conscious (swipe a key card to use the elevator) with an attractive foyer and friendly staff downstairs as well as a rather jarring life-size statue of Marilyn Monroe.
Positive first: they have a complimentary shoe shine service! Leave your shoes outside your door by midnight and they are back at your room, shined and ready to go by six a.m.! Also, the staff is friendly, and the doormen are swift (for the most part) to grab the door on your way in or out. They have an attached restaurant with a decent happy hour, if that is your thing. Also, there is an Illy coffee in the neighborhood, just a block away! And better, they are open early!
The rest of the hotel is average, filled with decaying 1980's furniture and appointments. The rooms feature radios with cassette decks, they look like they would have been the height of cool in the late 80's. Unfortunately, that appears to be the last date that anything (possibly barring the white ostrich chair in the sitting room) in the room had been updated. The walls were rather thin; I agree with a previous respondent who commented that they could hear the television from a neighboring room. On that note, if you're wondering where that geriatric cathode ray tube that your parents got rid of in 1986 went, it is in your room at the St. Gregory. Gigantic tv's with that horrible buzz and hiss noise. Everything else was just as old; two lamps were loose on their bases and hung to one side. Everything was clean, but I've had better sheets and pillows at a two star hotel. The tub didn't drain properly, so whenever you climbed into the tub you could look forward to 1/3 of an inch of cold water from your last shower.
The walk to the metro station is a little longer than I'd like; it is particularly unpleasant early in the morning or late at night.
Despite the nice staff, I'm going to go out of my way to avoid staying at the St. Gregory in the future. It is worth staying at if you expect three star amenities and the interior of a Best Western from the 80's (albeit a Best Western with a white ostrich leather chair in the sitting room). Otherwise, you can get significantly better amenities, service, and pricing by one of the hotel's many nearby competitors.

We thank BlueBear92 for his comments and while we cannot please everyone with our décor – it is not 80’s, all of our rooms have MP3 player docks, CD and radios, and the hotel was renovated in 2008. The Marilyn Monroe statue is the calling card of the hotel by Seward Johnson the most celebrated modern day American sculptor and the only one outside of 2 museums. While we could not please him with our cosmetics we are very happy that our staff did respond to him in the fashion that we offer all our guests friendly and expedient service. Do visit again and allow us to make this up to you.
