“Terrible hotel but Trinidad great!”

We were aware of basic facilities in Cuba but found rat droppings in the room, when we drew this to the attention of the hotel management they cleared (some) of them up but over the next three nights we stayed more accumulated and the maids spent their time sculpting towels in search of a tip rather than cleaning up. After seeing a cockroach running along the breakfast buffet we did not feel much like eating either.

“Grim in parts - but Trinidad was wonderful”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

We stayed here as part of Voyage Jules Verne tour. The hotel is based around a series of "bungalows". However I use this term carefully. We were in a fairly grim room with an adjoining door through which you could the people in the next room. Our room was quite dark and round by the curtains there were dead cockroaches which perhaps says something about how thoroughly it was cleaned. On our second day the power failed in our room and we were moved. Our second room was far better and appeared to have been recently refurbished. So we suggest you try to get rooms nearer to the main hotel complex where they seem better.
The main restaurant was quite poor. Food ran out; plates ran out, there was not enough cutlery and spoons seemed to be unknown to them. Staff seemed to care little. Most worrying the hotel allowed stray cats and dogs to wander round the restaurant scrounging from diners. To metThis is totally unacceptable and makes one wonder what standards they apply in the kitchen.
One of the nights we chose to eat in the poolside restaurant. We were desperate to escape the "Cuban buffet" if only for one night. We had surprisingly good pizzas but were the only people eating there - I guess because most people are on half board terms. On another night we ate at a restaurant on the edge of town which was OK.
All of these issues are compensated for by the joy of Trinidad. The buildings and the cutlure (including the music) were just wonderful.

Room Tip: Rooms nearer the main hotel seemed better and as the hotel is on quite a slope less of hill climb to...

“Nice but you need to be fit to walk there from the Trinidad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

After staying in the Plaza in Havana, this hotel was luxury !
Still very basic, more like Youth Hostel cabins but there was a nice bar and restaurant where the breakfast wasnt too bad,
There is an exchange by the pool that is open till six so that you can exchange sterling to CUC's which was really useful.
The accommodation was basic and the air con noisy but the location was lovely. I loved the pool and pool bar / snack bar and it was really nice to be able to sit by the pool with a Mojito and watch the sun go down at the end of the day. Amazing views.
Hint - don't switch your light on on your room until you have gone in and closed the door otherwise your room will be full of flying beetles.
Second night my bathroom played host to a lovely little green frog who was very pleased to be released back in to the wild.
The hotel is located on the outskirts of Trinidad, and the walk is up a steep hill that could be very tiring during the day and was quite exhausting after a night of Salsa dancing in the Plaza Major. Maybe the Hotel should invest in a few Coco Taxis reserved for the residents.
There is also a night club in the hotel grounds which is set in a cave, I didnt get there myself but some of my fellow travellers said it was pretty good but also quite a walk from the accommodation - which could be an advantage if you want a peaceful night.
I would have like to stay here longer.

Room Tip: I thin the rooms starting with "A" are closer to the Reception area and pool so you will h...

“Nice location and good grub!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

We arrived here from a terrible hotel in Santa Clara, so it felt like Christmas. Really lovely - great food (they charge for the beer and wine, but it is cheap and who cares?) - our room was in a nice location by the pool. Some of the little cabins seemed a bit stuck in the middle of nowhere - I would request a poolside room if I were to go again. Really big room and v clean. Friendly staff - poolside bar and good bank all on hand. The outside terrace by the restaurant is perfect for viewing the sunset - a great moment on the holiday. Great - can't fault it!

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are a bit stuck out on thier own - best to go for a poolside room or one higher up...

“Great Mountain Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

You go to Trinidad for its antiquity and charm in music art and culture;but a good inexpensive place to stay is hotel las cuevas, nestled in the mountains, one can get a panoramic view of the sea a mere 15 min drive beyond. The hotel has bungalows which are clean and comfortable, as well as standard rooms, surrounding the pool area. No internet and as usual food is a challenge in Cuba.

Room Tip: Choose a bungalow; below the pool area,, E or f series
