There's a commerative plaque recording the happy unveiling of (I think) a renovation of Portage exactly 10 years to the day of our visit (which went uncelebrated). The lack of celebration might be explained, as were our feelings of the place, by the statement on the bill that Portage is in administration/liquidation.
Our room which claimed to have a view of sound did look out onto part of the sound which sits immediately in front of the hotel but the majority of the view was of the rather ugly hotel (which lives up to its title of "resort") and some industrial crane which sits on the beach. For the price, the room was very plain and felt pretty terrible after the more expensive but better value Bay of Many Coves (as did the service).
The restaurant does have a good view over the sound but I think the chef may have fled and his duties handed to one of the many European students working at the hotel. The main courses were tepid and the pasta a sub-university horror show - soupy (but did we complain? No, we ate it up and said "thanks, yes very nice" and complain about it afterwards).
Our one negative experience in NZ other than the DoC huts but you do the Queen Charlotte to get away from those.
