We were in Picton as our last port of call in the South Island before moving north. Picton is more than a jumping off point for the ferry - explore the vineyards of Marlborough and take the Queen Charlotte Drive around the coast to Nelson - and we spent four very comfortable nights here in the Captain's Room. It's a lovely room with a roll top bath set on a plinth in the room as well as a separate bathroom. Jeanne and Carl are friendly hosts and the food was excellent. In particular Jeanne will do an anti-pasti platter in the evening if you don't want to go out and it was great with a few glasses of the local wine. The only question we would raise in retrospect is the cost. We have no complaints, we booked knowing the price and that's fine but when we were able to review the other equivalent quality B&Bs we stayed in over 5 weeks, it does pose questions about value for money. 50% more expensive than the Talavera Room at the excellent Lambton Heights on the other side of the water in Wellington? Or the same premium over the marvellous Byron at Prospect Hill in Auckland? Doesn't add up really. Just to be clear, this is our only reservation about McCormick House, which in every other regard is an excellent choice.
