“decent spa for reasonable price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Stayed in Pelion for 3 nights over the Christmas period and had a good experience.
It was really worth it in terms of room, wellness and food quality.
The room (and the hotel in general) was really clean, probably the first time, that i didn't find anything to complain about.
Room size is also great and it had everything you would expect from a 4 star hotel. (bathrobe, hairdryer, mini bar, safe box etc.)
The wellness area was good and kept up-to-date nothing seemed to be run down. There is a hot water pool outside, which is pretty nice when its steaming from the temperature difference and also you can enjoy different saunas and a steam room.
You have the possibility of having different treatments, massages as well.
The kitchen was very satisfactory. Had buffet breakfast and dinner at the roomrate. The selection of food and the quality of it was pretty good.
One thing you must try whilst you there is the omelette for breakfast. It is cooked for order. You go choose the ingredients and they cook it there for you. It is delicious, best omelette i´ve had for a long time.
Under the hotel there is a cave, which supposed to be good for respiratory problems. You can go down, take a book and spend some time in total quietness.
The location of the hotel is good, close to town centre where you can walk around a lovely little lake and an old mill.
The only negative was that you have options to play billiard, darts, table tennis in the lobby or squash, gym in the wellness area, but they are not free of charge.
Fair enough you need to pay for squash, but i really didn't expect to be charged for the gym, table tennis or billiard in a 4 star hotel.

“good price, good hotel - horrible hospitality, not friendly staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

We've been to the hotel twice (latest August 2011) since it's location (closeness to Balaton) and price (very reasonable with 3 small children) are attractive.

Parking is not a problem, there is a big parking lot closed for hotel guests, although in peak times you rather find parking spot far from the entrance, but it's not a big deal.

The reception area is spacious and clean, however it is not acceptable that in such an open space in the entrance they put the smoking area, so that everyone (preagnant women, small children, non smokers have to go through the smoke...

Rooms are clean and nice, they always had connecting rooms for us on both of the occasions (travelling with 3 children requires that, however I was missing family rooms or suites (or there are and i'm just not aware?). The staff really helped to maintain the cleaniness of the room throughout the whole week that is very challenging while travelling with small children, so a huge star for that (actually the maids are the most friendly part of the whole hotel staff).

Indoor and outdoor swimming pools are better than average, however in bad weather the indoor can be too crowded.
Huge star for the table tennis (ping-pong) facility that is professional and there is no one ever there so a perfect getaway from the crowded wellness area.
The playing room for children however is a big disappointment! It is small, not too many toys and the lady "taking care" of the children seems to be annoyed by children. And the fact that it's not air conditioned and lacks windows makes it a perfect substitute for a sauna in 30+ degrees... not really what you're looking for in a children's playing room...

The worst part of the hotel is no doubt the restaurant. Having half board (breakfast, dinner) included in the price is convenient, the food quality is okay, no complaints about that, however the I had the feeling that waiters actually hate guests and their job. I'm not a problematic guest and understand that they are underpaid, but I was rather not interacting with them (hence preferred not to order any drinks)... I haven't seen a smile or any sign of hospitality throughout the whole week... not really what I am looking for on a one week summer holiday on evenings (and mornings).

Reception does it's job like a well trained robot. I guess being friendly and polite is not in their job description.

Alltogether it's a fairly priced hotel with good facilities and horrible staff (please review you HR policies if you want returning guests).

“Reliable quality, good wellness hotel in a charming town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2011

We have been travelling to Pelion for many years, last time in late June 2011. Definitely not a luxury hotel, but rooms and wellness services offer a reliable four-star quality, worth its (not too high) price. Rooms are either Western or Eastern oriented. The Western ones look to the swimming pools + garden, and are quiet. The Eastern ones look towards the parking place which might be a bit noisy sometimes, but basically they are OK as well. The furniture is friendly, closets are very practical, but the beds could be a bit more comfy. The bathroom is nice. Cleanliness is OK. Free wifi in the rooms and reception area, but you need your laptop, otherwise no internet is available for guests. (There is an internet place near the hotel nevertheless.)
The gym has a bit old but realtively well mainteined equipment (cardio and fitness machines), towels are given at the entrance.
The spa is very good both for summer and winter time: the main swimming pool has a temperature of approx. 32 degrees C, you can swim out from the inside pool to its outdoor part. There is another outdoor pool for swimmers (a bit colder) and 2 pools with warm water inside. Separated part for smaller children. The swimming pool walls and floor could be a bit better cleansed: a more regular, complete wellness-laundry would not be bad at all, mostly as there are many children around every time. The sauna park offers a Finnish, a bio and an infra sauna plus a steam cabine. The garden of the hotel is huge, excellent for walking, playing, sun-bathing, etc.
The restaurant offers half board. The quality of food and ingredients do not satisfy gourmets or people with very high demands, but the result is always tasty, the cook is good (deep frozen and canned food is often found though, especially for garnish). The food is basicly satisfying average people with Central-Euaropean taste. The breakfast is abundant with hot and cold plates. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always available. Coffee and hot chocolate comes from huge machines. The dinner offers hot dishes, among them always a choise of fish, pasta, different meats, garnishes, 2 kind of soups, fresh salad +fruits and hot+cold desserts. Lunch can be ordered at the garden snack bar or in the restaurant, it is a la carte. A chef salad (very tasty) costs around HUF 1200 (€ 4,5), main dishes are around HUF 1500. Drinks are a bit overpriced. Waiters work fast and are really kind, if you need any help for any kind of celebration (e.g. birthday), they do everything for you. There is also an excellent pizzeria (Pepino or similar name) very near the hotel with similar prices.
If you come along with children or young family members in summer time, beware of the pigeon alarm system: there are plenty of small devices on each floor's balconies that release a special ultra sound. This cannot be heard by elder humans, but children and young people (until early 20s) with good hearing do hear it and is told to be very disturbing. So in this case ask for rooms that are far away from these devices. In winter time this is not a problem, as windows are closed and the ultra sound cannot be heard through them.
4th floor has smoking rooms, otherwise all other rooms are non-smoking. In the restaurant and lobby there are certain parts kept for smokers, hopefully these will desappear soon (at least I do not like smokers).
The cave of the hotel is excellent for pulmonal disease (astma, etc.) treatment, a 2 or 3-week lasting traetment gives a good result.
The massage parlour and estetician of the hotel is of high quality. No hairdresser in the hotel (and hard to find any in whole Tapolca).
The town of Tapolca is really very charming and pleasant, a beautiful small lake plenty of golden fishes and the town center is to a couple of minutes walking distance only. Bycicles can be rented, Balaton is near (10 kms) on cyclysts road.
All in all Pelion is a really good hotel with excellent location, good for summer or winter holidays.

“comfortable and reasonably priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2011

Stayed at this hotel for one night for a conference. The room was fine and had a view over the pool. The TV channels are limited and there was only one English channel while the others were divided bewteen Hungarian and German channels. Breakfast was also excellent and they had a wide selection of cereals, bread, toast, hot dishes, cheeses, hams as well as fruit and yogurts. The spa area is just splendid and is included in the price. However, there is no public transport nearby so it is essential to have your own means of transport.

The hotel is in the Balaton lake area and is mostly busy in the Summer period. The main tourist market seem to be Germany and Austria since you will see hotel and restaurant signs in German.

If you have time, try to visit the small wine farms around the Balaton. Their wine is reasonably priced and I consider their whites as the best. Also, try to visit the Herend Porcelain factory about 45 minutes away by car but beware the rogue porcelain sellers outside the factory. The only genuine Herend porcelain is sold inside in their factory shop. It is a bit on the high side but some of the designs are so magnificent that they are really museum pieces. If you don't manage to visit the factory you can still find it at the Duty Free in Ferihegy airport at the same prices (but with a smaller range).

“Not intended for the business traveler at all - even off-season”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2010

For a 4 star hotel, I didn't expect much from this hotel. First of all, they seemed to have a problem understanding English. No matter whom I talked to, at any time of the day, often had to repeat several times to be understood - and I've traveled extensively and come to Hungary many times and never had this problem.
Secondly the level of service is "friendly incompetence". Meaning they are the nicest people on the planet, but they will tell you matter of factly they won't help you.
For one thing, they falsely advertise high speed internet in the rooms. This is if: 1) you bring an ethernet cable with you as they often run out of them in the lobby and 2.) if you do not plan on connecting to your work VPN / network. Now I don't know about you, but unlimited surfing of "google" is not my idea of high speed internet when I think of a business trip. It wouldn't be so bad if it was indicated at the beginning, but it WORKED the first day, and for some reason the days thereafter - they shut it off. First thought it was an IT issue, then they came back and said, "No, you cannot connect to your work..." which isn't true considering I did my first night.
Now you can go into the only place in the hotel with wireless... the lobby.. but you have to pay T-mobile prices (typically 7 eur for 1 hour and 15 eur for 24), and of course you need to make sure your battery lasts awhile as there are no plugs. So considering what you pay a night, and expecting "free internet", it's completely ridiculous.
Overall very dissapointed with this hotel. For a hotel that wishes to cater to business events in the off-season, they completely failed here.
Also - failed to clean my room 1 day. Never refilled the mini-bar. Even basics they get wrong.
Buffet is great, but other than the friendlyness... do not recommend. Perhaps I should have paid out of pocket for the massage and spa... might have relieved the stress this place created!!
