We have been travelling to Pelion for many years, last time in late June 2011. Definitely not a luxury hotel, but rooms and wellness services offer a reliable four-star quality, worth its (not too high) price. Rooms are either Western or Eastern oriented. The Western ones look to the swimming pools + garden, and are quiet. The Eastern ones look towards the parking place which might be a bit noisy sometimes, but basically they are OK as well. The furniture is friendly, closets are very practical, but the beds could be a bit more comfy. The bathroom is nice. Cleanliness is OK. Free wifi in the rooms and reception area, but you need your laptop, otherwise no internet is available for guests. (There is an internet place near the hotel nevertheless.)
The gym has a bit old but realtively well mainteined equipment (cardio and fitness machines), towels are given at the entrance.
The spa is very good both for summer and winter time: the main swimming pool has a temperature of approx. 32 degrees C, you can swim out from the inside pool to its outdoor part. There is another outdoor pool for swimmers (a bit colder) and 2 pools with warm water inside. Separated part for smaller children. The swimming pool walls and floor could be a bit better cleansed: a more regular, complete wellness-laundry would not be bad at all, mostly as there are many children around every time. The sauna park offers a Finnish, a bio and an infra sauna plus a steam cabine. The garden of the hotel is huge, excellent for walking, playing, sun-bathing, etc.
The restaurant offers half board. The quality of food and ingredients do not satisfy gourmets or people with very high demands, but the result is always tasty, the cook is good (deep frozen and canned food is often found though, especially for garnish). The food is basicly satisfying average people with Central-Euaropean taste. The breakfast is abundant with hot and cold plates. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always available. Coffee and hot chocolate comes from huge machines. The dinner offers hot dishes, among them always a choise of fish, pasta, different meats, garnishes, 2 kind of soups, fresh salad +fruits and hot+cold desserts. Lunch can be ordered at the garden snack bar or in the restaurant, it is a la carte. A chef salad (very tasty) costs around HUF 1200 (€ 4,5), main dishes are around HUF 1500. Drinks are a bit overpriced. Waiters work fast and are really kind, if you need any help for any kind of celebration (e.g. birthday), they do everything for you. There is also an excellent pizzeria (Pepino or similar name) very near the hotel with similar prices.
If you come along with children or young family members in summer time, beware of the pigeon alarm system: there are plenty of small devices on each floor's balconies that release a special ultra sound. This cannot be heard by elder humans, but children and young people (until early 20s) with good hearing do hear it and is told to be very disturbing. So in this case ask for rooms that are far away from these devices. In winter time this is not a problem, as windows are closed and the ultra sound cannot be heard through them.
4th floor has smoking rooms, otherwise all other rooms are non-smoking. In the restaurant and lobby there are certain parts kept for smokers, hopefully these will desappear soon (at least I do not like smokers).
The cave of the hotel is excellent for pulmonal disease (astma, etc.) treatment, a 2 or 3-week lasting traetment gives a good result.
The massage parlour and estetician of the hotel is of high quality. No hairdresser in the hotel (and hard to find any in whole Tapolca).
The town of Tapolca is really very charming and pleasant, a beautiful small lake plenty of golden fishes and the town center is to a couple of minutes walking distance only. Bycicles can be rented, Balaton is near (10 kms) on cyclysts road.
All in all Pelion is a really good hotel with excellent location, good for summer or winter holidays.
