Backround - Firstly with friends we booked a new years holiday in Austria through a very respectable travel agent . Due to overbooking they proposed a "similar" hotel namely Fit & Fun in the Czech republic. Before accepting we looked at the web site and it seemed nice so we accepted the change so herefollows our review. We have stayed in over 100 hotel across the globe so we have something to benchmark against. Our group consisted of 2 couples with 2 kids each between 5 and 10 years old.

General impression - Old communistic style hotel which in the past catered for workers of co-ops from Eastern Germany, Czech and Poland.
Service at reception was cold, unfriendly and only understood Czech or German(no english or Polish). Rooms met the minimum standard required for hotel. Towels in Bathroom were torn and had to be replaced. The heating system ensured that the heating was unaaceptably hot in the day and cold at night as they switched it off (no possibility to regulate the temperature). There was hot water but it took a long while to get to the room.

Meals - We had booked all inclusive and the food was suitable for 1 or no star hotel. in a nutshell - bad. Breakfast consited of boiled eggs and cheapest possible oily sausage/Hams etc. The bread was edible but not fresh. Dinner was daily chicken broth and standard gulash with potatoes rice or macaroni. which strongly brought back memories of my time served in the army.

Recreational facilities - Bowling alley - balls were cracked, bowling computer did not count pins correctly, lanes were not flat, shoes were not disinfected. Pool - Clean and quite nice.
Sauna - You booked by the hour which seemd OK but there was no system for regulating the hour that you had bought. So half way through your sauna some univited guests generally pitched up, stripped off in front of your kids and showed thier crown jewels. It was probably educational for the kids.
Ski slope - Next to the hotel and the slope itself was good although a little icy but the ski-lift broke down continually and took some time to fix. Rented ski's and equipment was at least 3 seasons old but in generally OK condition. There was absolutely no facility for non-skiers - no place to sit, no bar or other facility near to the hotel to watch persons skiing - this is a major problem if one of the parents is a non-skier. At the bottom of the slope there was a place to sit but it is about 1km from the hotel and is completely exposed (in -10 this can be a problem).

Payment - The hotel exchanged only Euro/Dollars. Reception could accept payment by card only between 07:00 to 19:00 as after this time the machine went "off-line" - this is the first time I have experienced this.

New Years Eve entertainment - For the children a magician which performed 1 trick and then dissapeared as he had to get to the next hotel and this was followed by a decidely raunchy show involving a boa constrictor and a scantily clad dancer - once again probably educational for the kids. Only the company of our friends enabled us to enjoy this new years party - No service whatsoever - it took us over 20 minutes to get the attention fo a waiter to order a bottle of wine and some soft drinks for the kids. The next morning breakfast was at standard hours between 7:00 - 10:00. We along with most other guests who stayed up past midnight arrived around 10:00 and found that all food had already been cleared - only after intervention with management (which the breakfast staff insisted were not in the hotel) was an "extention" of 1/2 hour achieved.

And the to crown it off the receptionist conveniently forgot to return a 30 Euro deposit which we only remembered about when getting home. For us it is not any substantial amount but the very fact that it was not returned indicates lack of ethics by the hotel. For reference the check out was not rushed in any way so there was ample time for the receptionist to remember.

In short - Maybe the standard represented by this hotel was accepetable in the 80's for workers who had no choice but in todays service orientated world they should seriously rethink thier complete offer as every person we met was experiencing similar problems. We are severely dissapointed that a reputably travel agency would place anyone in such a place and we aill be taking this up with them.
