“Budget traveller's home in Riga”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

I stayed three nights at the Hotel Toss. The hotel is located in the southeastern suburbs of Riga, two blocks from a major tram stop. The ride to central Riga is exactly 20 minutes. The hotel is in a working class, predominantly Russian speaking suburb. Ethnic Latvians consider this dangerous, but to an outsider (I'm American) there was nothing scary about the neighborhood. It's not a wealthy area by any means, but there's a market where old ladies come to sell flowers and fruit from their gardens and there are lots of people around. There's certainly nothing scary about the place, though there aren't many services nearby -- unless you want to bowl. The hotel is called "Toss" as in "toss a bowling ball" -- it's next to and associated with a large bowling alley.

The hotel itslelf is spotlessly clean. The staff are reasonably fluent in English, and the rooms are cheaply but cheerfully furnished. The rooms are small and basic, but fine for a short stay. The hotel internet service is free and -- unlike that of top western chain hotels -- truly high-speed. Bring your own toiletries and be prepared for lumpy pillows, but expect good, solid service in a good, clean hotel.

Two minor notes: First, the rooms ARE wheelchair accessible through an elevator, though there are no grasp bars in the bathrooms, etc. Second, there is no air conditioning. This is generally not an issue in Latvia, but could be during a heat wave.

All in all, only the super-cheap bathroom furnishings prevent my giving this hotel five stars in its category. If you're on a budget and want to save 50% - 75% off central Riga prices, stay here and take the tram into town. A very pleasant experience.

“Good value but a bit hidden away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

We struggled to find the place - we knew it was next to Lido restaurant but our mistake was getting off the tram a couple of stops early, close to the BIG Lido restaurant. After finding it, it was a great place for our city break base.

Rooms fairly spartan, comfy beds, great modern bathrooms. Clean and modern building.

Breakfast a basic continental, served in nice old vaulted cellar room. Each guest served a small plate of sausage & salad, then help yourself to bread to make toast, cheese and meats for sandwiches. The chef has a bit of a cucumber obsession, even by Eastern European standards!

Spa suite was good but odd - nice sauna, the small circular pool was fitted with an adjustable jet so you could swim (endless) lengths, but you needed to prebook your time slot with hotel reception the day before.

Next door is the bowling alley owned by the same company - which was fine for a couple of drinks at the end of the evening when we didn't want too much of a trek home (or to risk missing the last tram). A lot cheaper drinking here than in the city centre and had friendly staff confused to find non-locals in there!

We'd also recommend the Lido restaurant chain, one of which is nearby this hotel although the one we ate in is the Lido Entertainment Centre super-duper one. So good we went back twice. Try the 1 Lat champagne.

Toss was great for the price, a 15min ride on the tram into the city centre.

“Poor location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2008

The Toss Hotel is not convenient to town, and the hotel lacks any form of atmosphere. I did discover the trams so that made journeys into riga much more affordable, a taxi from the Bus Station cost about £19 and taxis from Riga about £15. So use the trams, they are easy, frequent and affordable.

The hotel lists a range of services, like a spa, sauna etc but they were not available when I choose the use and was asked to give an hours notice. Not really the idea!

  • Liked — it was value for money
  • Disliked — its poor location from the centre of Riga

“Plenty to do at the TOSS”

The name of this place might seem rather strange, but don't let that put you off!

I stayed here for four nights at the end of August. The building itself is a former flax mill (I think), and the conversion has been impressively done. I found the rooms clean, the bathroom large and the ceilings high. Everything is impressively modern.

The staff at the hotel were helpful, but some of them spoke more English than others. Having said that, all of them spoke better English than I speak Latvian.

The hotel has a ten-pin bowling alley attached. This proved very handy, as there was heavy rain on one of the days I was in Riga. Again, this facility was impressively modern.

The hotel is about 5 mins walk to a tram stop, and the tram takes about 15 minutes to get to the centre of town. It is cheap at a flat rate fare of 0.30 Lats (about 30p).

The tram line does go through the run-down Moscow district, much of which seems to be falling down. That in itself is quite interesting, though not highlighted in most guidebooks.

  • Liked — Rooms - very modern, high ceilings. Breakfast was great!
  • Disliked — Could have been nearer Old Riga.
