stayed there for 2 nights with 11 guys. it seemed a pleasent enough place for the price. until when checking out the hotel the receptionist and security guard who appearedby magic [none speaking english,whilst the same receptionist did the day before] charged us 200 lats before we could leave. the security guard took the mini bus drivers keys and frettened us with police if we did not pay. as our flight was 1andhalf hours from then we payed. would not touch the place again and warn others trippers of the possible surprise when checking out.

Very dated room, with a very large window which you could fully open, and we were on the 7th floor! Tiny little restaraunt/bar on the upper floor with no character at all. We were on a lads trip so it didn't matter so much, but wouldn't recommend for romance. The building itself was proper ugly and the view we had from the room was of the docks and the railway. I was gutted when we went to meet our mates who were staying in the Europa City for a couple of quid more a night. The funniest thing about the stay was when a rickshaw man peddled us back from the centre (it's miles away), he only lasted a quarter of distance before we had to peddle ourselves with him knackered in the back!

We stayed for 2 nights in mid-September 2007 & found the staff to be really friendly. The room was a bit dated but for the amount it cost we were pleased with the size and cleanliness - couldn't fault it for a place to lay your head for the night!
The breakfast was well-replenished and lots of good fresh coffee available and some hot food (mini hot dogs & omelette) too.
Although it is a fair walk into the centre we caught the regular trolley-bus (no. 19 or 24) each time which took about 15-20mins and only cost 0.30L each (equivalent to £0.30). The trolley bus terminus was about 10mins walk from the hotel.
We would recommend it for a cheap stay in a lovely city!

Stayed here end of May 07 for 4 nights. Having read some other reviews did not know what to expect with it being my first time to eastern Europe. The Hotel was positioned about 30 mins walk from the Old Town (main area for sightseeing and drinking). Not a great looking building and some of the local area did not look the best. The rooms while old and slightly worn were well maintained in a clean manner, and evidence of good cleaning practice were throughout the Hotel. The few staff we met were friendly, with the execption of the breakfast girl who never smiled or replenished items. Breakfast was very basic, not your big greasy fry up that I am used to in Hotels over here, but I will say it was adequate and set me up for the day.
My rooms was big and spacious, however the bathroom was small and the brown fittings did not help, did find a strange smell at times in the bathroom, the heated towel rail seems to be on 24/7 so it is an idea to close the bathroom door to prevent it heating the rooms if the weather is good.
Access to the old town is easy, walked it in 30 mins, tram is 5 mins from Hotel and costs 30 centines.

Oveall I enjoyed the stay, while the Hotel is basic, all I needed was a bed to get some sleep when I was not exploring or drinking.
