This was quite a confusing experience for me because even though a lot of things were quite bad at the hotel, the perfect location and the low price surprised me in a positive way.
It's definitely not the Ritz-Carlton, but then again, you're paying around 50-60 euros per night for a standard doubleroom. I recommend making sure that your room overlooks the park, which is a brilliant view. Location is ridiculously good if not the best in the city.
In any case I had a brilliant weekend in Latvia, thanks to the good location of the hotel. One might even laugh at some of the stuff that goes on at the hotel. Here's a list:
- very bad internet connection. They mention free WiFi all over their website but in reality it doesn't work at all. (at least not on the 5th floor)
- Ordered flowers to my room prior to check in to surprise my friend. Instead there were no flowers. They showed up eventually, but they showed up when me and my friend were sleeping and had no time to react to the knock on the door and the hotel staff member barging in with his key. He woke us up didn't apologize. Just a quiet retreat to the corridor.
- "Cable TV" showed 3-4 channels. barely.
- No hair dryer in the room. We called room service to bring us one and it showed up in no time. The only problem was that it was broken. Called again to bring a working one.
- Bathroom was probably renovated in the 1980's, they were honestly the worst part of the hotel. A weird layer of old dirt was on the bathtub and you could see the pipes under the tubs. Really disgusting.
- After the flower experience we decided to use the chain lock on the door. I grabbed the chain and it came off along with a small piece of the door (picture included). At this point we just laughed and accepted the fact that this was a genuine post-soviet experience.
But despite all this I did not find the experience to be bad. When you're paying 50-60 euros for a double room, you should have realistic expectations and not whine about irrelevant things. I was happy that I chose this instead of some hostel. If you're on your honeymoon, use your brain and pay more for your hotel. If you're on a weekend trip with friends, this is a good, inexpensive place with reliable staff. The location is brilliant and there's a lot more to do in Riga than stay in a hotel room.
