In summer 2010 I have spent a long weekend in Liepaja with wife and kid. We stayed at Liva Hotel where staff is competent, rooms are clean, location is perfect and breakfast is lovely!

After almost a week in the hostel in Riga we treated ourselves with three stars hotel for our two nights stay in Liepaja, and it was definetly the best value for money we could ask for. The room was very clean and cozy, especially the bathroom where I took a really nice long shower after the whole day trip. The overall feel is very Scandinavian and the hotel is the right in the city centre on the main street and very quiet. We booked B&B, and breakfast was a bit modest, but very tasty. They say the hotel is refurbished building from the Soviet times, but it's so refurbished that you'd never guess that is in fact the old hotel. Anyway I'd give the full recommendation for this hotel

We went to Liepaja when the Baltic Beach festival was on. There were very few hotels avaiable when we tried to book so ended up having to pay for a business room in the Hotel Liva. Unfortunatley they took advantage of the high demand for hotels by charging 50% extra than the prices advertised on the "Room Rates" sign in reception. Considering we were having to pay for a business room anyway this ended up being rather expensive (£90). I felt that this was a cheap and easy way for them to make an extra few dollars and not neccessary.
The Business Room was ok but the shower was certainly not what I'd expect for the price.

On the second night we moved to a 2nd floor Economy Room which was cheaper but not the normal room rate. This room had no air conditioning which meant that we had to open the windows. Mistake! We were eaten alive by mosquitos that came from the trees next to the hotel. They were so big and I was actually woken up several times during the night by the high pitched sound that they make. Not Pleasant!

Breakfast: Normal Baltic standard, i.e. cold meats, cheese, bread, yoghurts!
