“Great location in the city!”

We booked this hotel because it had good reviews and looked really nice. When we arrived we checked in and asked if the hotel was busy and were told it was extremely quiet which quite pleased us. We took out bags to our room and ventured straight out. The city is so pretty and there was snow, it was freezing but absolutely perfect. When we went back to the room we were more than ready for a nice hot shower. There was no hot water. We reported it to reception who said they would get it sorted out. So we went back out for the evening. On returning the receptionist said it was all ok, it wasn't though. So they moved us to another room which was very small and pokey compared to the other room. By this time it was close to midnight and then we realised that there was no heating. The receptionist said they would move us again in the morning. We were a little annoyed as although they did move us to another room (3rd time lucky) considering the hotel was near empty they never even offered to put us into a suite for all of the inconvenience caused. We travel a lot and many hoteliers give you an upgrade if they are not busy. Overall two of the three rooms that we were in were quite comfortable but we felt that they all needed a bit of TLC. It was a lovely trip and we would definitely return but not to this hotel as it was quite average.

Room Tip: Court yard rooms are nice.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. The Hotel is super clean. It is right in the center of the wonderful old town of Tallinn. It is a beautiful historic building. We highly recommend this hotel. We enjoyed our stay there.

“Perfect location in the Old Town, Tallinn”

Lovely hotel located right in the heart of the old town in Tallinn - just a few steps away from the main square and a few minutes walk to most restaurants and bars.

The staff were absolutely exceptional - so friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was a fairly standard buffet, but you could also choose a cooked option from a very long list.

We were delighted to be upgraded to a suite overlooking the courtyard. The bathroom was amazing with a huge bath, vast monsoon shower and a private sauna - ideal for warming up after a day wandering around in the snow!

The room and bathroom could have done with a little bit of maintenence to fix the odd bit of peeling paint, but now I'm getting really picky! The only problem we had was that the room was not vacuumed during our stay, which was slightly annoying as we had brought grit in on our boots from the snowy streets.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Merchant's House again on our next trip to Tallinn - it really is in a superb location and the staff really were excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel as the Beer House is on the opposite side of the street and...

“A wonderful part of brilliant Tallinn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We were there in early December. Having read the reviews I was expecting the room to be cold but it wasn’t. There was an electric heater which boosted the temperature when needed. We overlooked the courtyard, which I think would be lovely in the summer but was packed up for the winter.

I appreciate that rooms onto the street may be noisy because of the Beer House opposite, so I suggest asking for a different location if this would disturb you. We really liked the Beer House, though – very convenient for a quick, and good, drink.

The breakfast was very good –cooked to order during the week and buffet- only at weekends. Add to this the location – just steps away from the main square, lovely staff and that Tallinn is gorgeous, and you just can’t go wrong.

Room Tip: Ask for one at the back if street noise bothers you

“Magnificent, Magical and Majestic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

I travel a lot. And I am in the hotel business which makes me a customer from hell. So it either takes something really terrible or something very special to make me come onto TripAdvisor and pass judgement.

I came to Tallinn as part of my New Year celebrations and I decided to stay at The Merchants House Hotel, a converted 16th century merchants house (the clue is in the name!) in the very heart of Old Town Tallinn.

I chose the hotel due to its location and also because I had visited the property for a drink in the hotel's Ice Bar back in 2006 but had not stayed there, making the mistake of choosing another hotel that was to prove far more impersonable in comparison and poorly located for the bars and restaurants in the Old Town.

The Merchants House Hotel staff are friendly and extremely polite, the rooms are of a high standard, the hotel itself is gorgeous and a stone throws from one of the most beautiful town squares in Europe.

The breakfasts were excellent, beds and rooms cleaned well, the open fire was always tended to in the main area (which I loved so I could read my first and only book of the year), and the internet was reliable and fast.

The General Manager, Jo(h)n Poole, was constantly checking and rechecking that his guests were being looked after, something that more hotels in Tallinn should take note of.
All-in-all it was an excellent stay at a time when Tallinn was at its busiest (new Year and Russian orthodox Christmas).

It is certainly not an internationally recognized brand or even part of a chain, but what it is a the best alternative (actually for me now the only alternative) for both a short business trip or a weekend adventure in Tallinn, a city which for me is the best weekend getaway in Europe next to Lubeck.

PS. Only one small complaint. I only received one fresh towel on my first day in my single room, and as Christmas was again rather over excessive, I would have preferred an extra large one in addition as showering is a two towel affair. However a simple request resolved this for the duration of the stay.

Room Tip: I saw the presidential suite...wow. Great for a family group. Try to get a room off the main street...
