This hotel chain has a good, easy-to-use website. However, the hotel is a dingy affair, with low ceilings, poor service and smoky rooms that reminded me of Russia in the mid 1990s. I asked for a refund, which is the first time I have done so in many hotel stays around the world. I don't expect to get a reply any time soon.
Basics first: we booked the most expensive room available online, which was a suite on a high floor. Features of the suite included a kitchenette with no refrigerator, filter coffee with no filter papers, a toilet that did not flush, basins that did not drain properly, an alleged mini-bar (we will never know since we were not given the key) and a lovely scent of stale cigarette smoke - in a non-smoking room. The bed was so concave, my wife and I clung to the edges, fearing injury if we let go and rolled into the middle at the same time.
The hotel ambience is rather sleazy, which not that surprising considering it has an in-house casino. The combination of a low-end casino and hotel isn't really a great mix for a family holiday or romantic getaway. Ou room was advertised as being some kind of glossy casino chic and the photo online looked great. In reality, the room was like one of those Waikiki hotels that was built just after world war 2. The carpet was especially nasty and as our baby crawled around, we told ourselves nervously, 'it's healthy for her to get resistance to germs.'
The restaurant food is very cheap. It is also very greasy and one of our group was moved to comment, 'would you like some pasta with your grease?' Breakfast was plentiful in quantity if not quality.
I was mainly disappointed in the casual dishonesty of the hotel management and staff, in misrepresenting the qualities and appearance of the rooms. The hotel checked us into a suite with a broken air-conditioner, with full knowledge that it would not work. (The clerk admitted this)
This resulted in a complete fiasco, where we could not inhabit the room in the day or sleep at night. The front desk sent someone to 'fix' it three times, it leaked water everywhere, made horrible noises and generally contributed to a miserable night.
Service level was extremely poor and the management has clearly not encouraged the staff to show any self-direction or interest in guest comfort. For example, we got quite overheated during the night due to the broken air-conditioner. Since the fridge was missing from the kitchenette and we were not given a key to the mini-bar, I approached the front desk at 2.30 a.m. for some cool water. I was told I would have to pay for it, that I could not put the cost on my room bill and that I would have to go back to get cash or a credit card to pay for it. As another example, the person 'repairing' the air-conditioner moved furniture away from the place where it would drip water, right into the path of anyone trying to get out of bed. He just left it there and departed.
Accidents happen at hotels and I don't mind taking the good with the bad. However, when the hotel knows it will not provide what is being paid for, that is fraud. In this case, it was compounded by bad service and an unfortunate lack of taste throughout the hotel. If you can get a room for 30 euros or something, it is probably on a par with a youth hostel. But, if you expect a decent hotel, look elsewhere - especially if you hope to get any sleep.
