“very helpful front office staff but place badly needs refurbishing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2010

We stayed there for 3 days and lucky to have the big room above the reception area. Very spacious but the furnitures are old and tired... they need to make it more modern to have more appeal to travellers. Receptionists were very helpful... my husband left his carry on bag in Kaunas and the friendly receptionist (tall with dark hair, I think the name is Anna) asked a friend of hers to bring it to us same day without any charge (the friend works in Kaunas but lives in Vilnius). Heating during winter time should also be upgraded... the owner had to buy more oil heaters for our other group mates' rooms as it didn't have sufficient heating. Good breakfast selection although restaurant staff needs to smile more often.

“Hotel's usual rate - not value for money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2009

I just came back from a 3-night trip to Vilnius. I was travelling with 2 kids. I booked City Gate Hotel because of it's incredible low rate (9 euro per night for a double room with an extra bed) in one of the hotel reservation sites. I realized that it's someone's mistake but still made a booking. Upon our arrival reception girl tried to say that the price is unreal. But it did not bother me much cause i had a booking confirmation in my hands.
The room was ok, but there's a lack of storage facilities. For 3-people accommodation it was only 1 very small wardrobe for hanging coats, no shelfs for cloth at all. Cleaning lady was probably cleaning only in the middle of the room and the bathroom because all the corners especially around the desk and under the beds (where someome's Chupa-Chups was lying all 4 days) were full of dust. Most of the time it was an annoying sound coming from pipes in the bathroom even if the door was closed.
At the end i've paid 27 euro for 3 night including breakfast which is of cause a fantastic deal. BUT i would not chouse this hotel for 82 Euro which they have mentioned upon arrival. Last April my husband and I were staying in much better 4-start hotel just 300 m away for 75 euro per night (and it was before the crises which touched this country a lot)

“Great location and helpful front desk staff””
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2009

Stayed there on our tour to baltic states. Arrived late at night and the staff were very helpful. We got a room on the third floor. The room is great and arranged with taste, spacious enough for three star hotel. The room has a small fridge, TV has popular international news channels in English. Hotel has an elevator and free wireless internet in the whole hotel. Breakfast was ok - musli, cheese, yogurt, fish, bacon, tomatoes, cucumbers, boiled and fried eggs. We used safe deposit boxes, order tours and some extra services at the reception. Receptionists are helpful, willing to assist and their English is very good! In my opinion main advantages of hotel - location and good price. The hotel is centrally located, very near to Gates of Dawn and town hall. A wonderful base to explore Vilnius. Lots of restaurants and several massage salons, art galleries and nigh clubs around.

“Cozy Setting and Convenient Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2009

If you thought that the practice of negotiating room rates is stuff of legends, think again. We successfully haggled a triple from €135 to €100 per night. I actually feel bad because this was the coziest hotel yet in our tour of the Baltic states.

Don't let appearances fool you. Its curb appeal leaves much to be desired. But once inside, you know instantly that this boutique hotel is a gem. The staff is friendly and casual. The included breakfast buffet is tasty. There is free wifi access as well as a house laptop for use. The rooms are uniquely furnished, not the typical cookie cutter design of bigger hotels. The wood floor in our room was a nice touch. The view however was forgettable. The bathroom layout was bland and had a persistent mustiness to it. We were provided with an aerosol deodorizer and that was a good enough solution. The hotel is a two minute stroll from the Gate of Dawn. There doesn't seem to be much else in terms of food and shopping nearby.

Consider this place if you favor a quiet, cozy atmosphere with convenient access to old town Vilnius.

“Comfortable, handy hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2008

We stayed for 3 nights at the city gate and had a comfortable stay. Our room overlooked a brick wall, which didn't bother us as we spend most of the time at hotels sleeping. The room was clean and spacious.

The breakfast was a good buffet style. You ask for your hot drinks at the bar - which at least saves waiting for someone to take an order! The staff were friendly and helpful.

The only minor problem with our room was that the alleyway between our room and the brick wall which provided our view was used by large lorries in the mornings, so we were generally woken up by 7.30am because of the lorries. Generally this wasn't too much of a problem as we do like to get out and about quite early - and it saved us using an alarm clock!

  • Liked — The location - opposite gates of dawn
  • Disliked — lorries in the mornings
