I was last in Kaunas in 2003 for a Lithuania-Scotland match, and back then my I swore I would NEVER return to the place ever again as I found it to be a horriable place.
7 years later Scotland are paired with Lithuania again and the game is to be played in Kaunas as before.... I decided to go again, but was telling all my friends nothing but bad things about the place. In 2009 Vilnius was sellected as European Capital of Culture, and since then Kaunas has cleaned itself up and now a not to bad provencial city.
I decided to picj the Hotel Mene due to its price and location (its is in the heart of the old town and about 5 minutes walk from the main street in Kaunas).
I had arranged for the hotel to pick me up at the airport when I arrived, and they were waiting for me, and was at the hotel and checked in to it in no time.
I was in room 3 which is situated next to the reception desk.... the rooms are spacious and clean, though the bedclothes could be a little to be desired for, with the top blanket just covering the surface of the bed, and two over-sizes (and over used!!!!) pillows.
Tv in the room with about 100 stations and a few in English.
My only major problems with the hotel are the walls are paper-thin in it!!!! There is no night porter and after 11pm the guests are left to themselves in the hotel... also the front door is locked after 11pm, so guests are given a key... this is where the problems start! Most guests will be given one key, so if you are in a group and the person with the key is not there, then you have to ring the door bell, and as there is no staff, usually a guest has to get up to open it (I did this myself after someone was buzzing for about 15 minutes to get in and nobody would answer!)
Breakfast is not to bad... juice and a plate of cheese and ham with some slices of bread... not the greatest, but enough to get you started.
If I had the choice to stay here then I probably would again, but be asked to be away from the reception area this time.
