You are warned. The rooms are OK but we found not very clean. The bathroom had not been cleaned in weeks. The shower leaked all over the floor. Breakfast was distinctly poor. And the wifi was not working in the rooms.
But all that was as nothing to the bar.
We asked at the reception desk if there was internet access elsewhere. The nice blond receptionist told us to use the computer in the bar. So we walked the few steps into the bar. My husband sat down at the computer and went to work. I sat in a chair nearby waiting my turn and was approached by the waitress. I said I was waiting to use the internet and did not wish to order a drink thank you. A young man who was sitting on the guest side of the bar launched into a loud verbal assault that began with “This is not a railway station. It is a bar. If you want to be in here you have to order a drink” and ended some minutes later with, “If you don’t like Slovak people go home!” He then stormed out of the hotel. Some minutes later he came back and literally dragged the receptionist into the bar to order me out. Only by this time I was at the keyboard and my husband standing behind me as we dealt with the email traffic resulting from the sudden death of a relative in Australia. The receptionist was clearly embarrassed. The young man did not challenge my husband, only me. And on it went, and on and on. It seems the bar is a separate business to the hotel and that he was the owner of the bar business. At least he won't be in business long.
However, don’t worry. Turn right at the front door and walk a few doors down the street to a well patronised, local bar with eager, attentive staff, willing service and free wifi access. This place was full until late at night, lively, a bit smoky for our tastes but we were welcomed, offered the log in the moment we produced the notebook, given water and asked if we would like to order more. Needless to say we did not go into the hotel bar again. And it seems no one else did either.
As we were holidaying but also scouting business opportunities in either Slovakia or Hungary, that appalling experience meant that Slovakia was crossed off the list then and there.
President Hotel is just OK but the service is really something else.
