“Don’t be misled by the historical building”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We booked a standard room for two but surprisingly there were three beds in it leaving literally no empty places there and its bathroom was unbelievably small lacking a real door (it had only a plastic door that could be moved like an accordion) and strange and loud noises came from it after flushing the toilet. I could accept this room in a dormitory but surely not in a hotel. It’s unfair that standard room photos uploaded to the hotel webpage depict only the beds and totally ignore the bathroom. We booked this room as a standard one but the world’s smallest bathroom can not be called or categorized as standard.
We complained at the reception but there was only one solution: asking other room of a higher category after paying extra costs. The new room was good enough to stay one night, the bathroom met the normal standards, it was quiet but the bedding remained from the 70’s and traces of former patching were visible everywhere.
To be fair and just all rooms, the lobby, and the restaurant were clean, the hotel staff was kind and helpful and we were surprised by the high quality of breakfast (it was served in a beautiful room; the dishes were diverse and abundant). The hotel is located in the centre of Szeged so all sights are within a walking distance.

Room Tip: I worth spending a little more and booking a superior room

“Three stars may be stretching it...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

Even by European standards awarding Hotel Tisza three stars may be a bit generous. Upon arrival I was very optimistic -- the hotel has nice architecture in the lobby and the staircase. It has some very fine large rooms suitable for gatherings, or, as was more often the case, the included breakfast. What was not so great was the room.

I'll admit, we were trying to go cheap. We got a room for two people which somehow included four beds. In most hotels putting two beds in the room would have been stretching it, but Hotel Tisza upped their game by sacrificing nearly all available floor space and most of the bathroom for the extra beds. As far as the beds were concerned, they were functional.

The bathroom is the smallest I think I have ever seen and had VERY poor ventilation. Also, did I mention it lacked a door? Instead it had one those flimsy accordion dividers with some semi-translucent panels in it and about 2 inches of space under it. The plumbing was very poor and there was some sewer gas coming into the room and every time any amount of water or other liquid went down a drain (sink, toilet, or shower) a loud noise was heard. This noise was triggered by mouthwash on more than occasion and was dubbed "The Angry Sewer God". It was loud enough to wake people in the middle of the night.

As a result of the poor plumbing, lack of any sort of circulation device in the room, and pigeons that would fly in the windows if we left them open, we'd arrive back each night to cleaned by smelly room. Sleeping with the windows open made this much better, but it should be noted that there are some bars and clubs on the street and in the nearby area, and with the University of Szeged dominating the city, you can imagine that you do get noise.

The breakfast at the hotel, on the other hand, was quite nice. A good selection of meats, cheeses, breads, yogurt, and cereals. Very nice.

Unfortunately, for an overall rating I can't indicate "bi-polar". The location, price, and breakfast were all very good. The room and noise were both pretty bad. That averages out to about average, but if I'm ever back in Szeged I'll probably look somewhere else.

Room Tip: Spend the extra couple of Euro and get a room with AC, if nothing else it can act to circulate air i...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your for taking the time to write a review. We do appreciate all your comments and would like to give you a feedback. The room type you have stayed in was the cheapest and the only four bedded Standard room we have in the hotel. We usually offer this room type for 4 member families who seek low budget accommodation. Suppose this was the last available Standard room for the night in question. We are sorry you did not choose another available room type, for example a Classic or Superior room with airconditioning and bigger bathroom as well.

The bathroom in this Standard room is small indeed but taking into account the features of the hotel building the main aim was to forge a private bathroom in Standard rooms too, even if it smaller than usual.

As regards outside noise: the hotel lies in the very centre of Szeged, surrounded by cafes and restaurants, thus a background noise of the downtown can not be excluded.

Thank you for your kind words with respect to the breakfast you had in our hotel.

We hope that you will give us another chance to serve you.
Kind regards: Hotel Manager

“Awesome architecture, great hotel.”

I loved this hotel. The building itself is an architectural gem. Some of the room and bathrooms may be smaller, but that is because this building just like many others used to be some wealthy family`s estate in the 18th-19th century and only after that in the 1920`s that it was made into a hotel. There is only so much you can do without ruining the interior of the building. Staying here is like stepping back in time. Food is great and plentiful. Proximity to downtown is great it sits right on the beautiful large park that leads you into the center with bars shops and restaurant. The whole city is charming, clean old world and architecturally beautiful with all modern ammenities you can imagine. I love the outdoor caffees and restaurants, the festivities. I will be bach to this place as soon as I can.

“A good 3 star hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2011

Located just round corner from large quite flower filled square. Some distance away from Railway station, and the whole city was undergoing major road works. But hotel was quite and clean. Bedroom and bath were very clean but bedding and pillow were rather uncomfortable. Stayed fro two non consecutive nights so did not bother too much about this. Breakfast was rather sparse but not too bad. Some more variety was expected but this is a 3 star, a good one. Long corridors but elegant and clean furnishings. Corner room on third floor overlooked busy outdoor restaurant but it was very quite. agood base for our purposes, which was basically to visit our son on a student exchange at the local medical university. Hotel located within a couple of minutes to main shopping and pedestrian area, and main cultural centre. River tisza is just down the road. City is very laid back, pleasant tranquil and clean. Would not mind retiring here!

“Nice building socialist infrastructure and services, never come back”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2011

Only the elegant chandelier reminds me that Tisza Hotel has ***. The small rooms are like in an old style dormitory. The one person room is crowded with three separate beds. There is hardly no electricity in the bathroom, the weak water flow accompanied with strange voices. The bedding has been overused, and significant holes on it. Although the receptionist were kind, they were not able to answer any of my request (eg wifi, providing an extra extension cord)
In addition the prices are not moderate.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are sorry for the inconvenience you may have experienced in our hotel and let me give you a feedback to your comment: In Tisza Hotel we offer 4 room types: Apartments, Superior rooms, Classic rooms and finally low budget Standard rooms (doubles, triples and one 4-beddeed room). You must have chosen a Standard room and stayed in a triple one with single use.
As regards electricity in the bathrooms, it works provided that you have switched on the central lighting next to the entrance door. The hotel’s building is an old one that is why you might have heard the strange noise of the aqueduct.
We are sorry for the bedding, which we have brought to the attention of the hotel manager who took the necessary steps.
I am pleased to inform you that we have upgraded our wifi internet system, so wide broad internet is available now in our hotel.
The hotel’s receptionists try to do their best and try to fulfill guests every request. We are sorry there was no available extension cord at the reception at the time of your request.
We hope that you will give us another chance to serve you.

Kind regards: Hotel Manager
