Even by European standards awarding Hotel Tisza three stars may be a bit generous. Upon arrival I was very optimistic -- the hotel has nice architecture in the lobby and the staircase. It has some very fine large rooms suitable for gatherings, or, as was more often the case, the included breakfast. What was not so great was the room.
I'll admit, we were trying to go cheap. We got a room for two people which somehow included four beds. In most hotels putting two beds in the room would have been stretching it, but Hotel Tisza upped their game by sacrificing nearly all available floor space and most of the bathroom for the extra beds. As far as the beds were concerned, they were functional.
The bathroom is the smallest I think I have ever seen and had VERY poor ventilation. Also, did I mention it lacked a door? Instead it had one those flimsy accordion dividers with some semi-translucent panels in it and about 2 inches of space under it. The plumbing was very poor and there was some sewer gas coming into the room and every time any amount of water or other liquid went down a drain (sink, toilet, or shower) a loud noise was heard. This noise was triggered by mouthwash on more than occasion and was dubbed "The Angry Sewer God". It was loud enough to wake people in the middle of the night.
As a result of the poor plumbing, lack of any sort of circulation device in the room, and pigeons that would fly in the windows if we left them open, we'd arrive back each night to cleaned by smelly room. Sleeping with the windows open made this much better, but it should be noted that there are some bars and clubs on the street and in the nearby area, and with the University of Szeged dominating the city, you can imagine that you do get noise.
The breakfast at the hotel, on the other hand, was quite nice. A good selection of meats, cheeses, breads, yogurt, and cereals. Very nice.
Unfortunately, for an overall rating I can't indicate "bi-polar". The location, price, and breakfast were all very good. The room and noise were both pretty bad. That averages out to about average, but if I'm ever back in Szeged I'll probably look somewhere else.
Room Tip: Spend the extra couple of Euro and get a room with AC, if nothing else it can act to circulate air i...

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your for taking the time to write a review. We do appreciate all your comments and would like to give you a feedback. The room type you have stayed in was the cheapest and the only four bedded Standard room we have in the hotel. We usually offer this room type for 4 member families who seek low budget accommodation. Suppose this was the last available Standard room for the night in question. We are sorry you did not choose another available room type, for example a Classic or Superior room with airconditioning and bigger bathroom as well.
The bathroom in this Standard room is small indeed but taking into account the features of the hotel building the main aim was to forge a private bathroom in Standard rooms too, even if it smaller than usual.
As regards outside noise: the hotel lies in the very centre of Szeged, surrounded by cafes and restaurants, thus a background noise of the downtown can not be excluded.
Thank you for your kind words with respect to the breakfast you had in our hotel.
We hope that you will give us another chance to serve you.
Kind regards: Hotel Manager
