“Lovely little hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2007

Definitely not a typical 4* hotel but fantastic nonetheless.

We drove down from Budapest in a little over 2 hours and found the hotel easily enough. There was a warm welcome at reception, followed by a guided tour of the hotel and wellness centre. As the hotel is small, there was only one member of staff on at reception - not all of the staff spoke good English, they were all helpful and pleasant.

The room itself was lovely and airy with large windows along 2 of the walls. Unfortunately, the back of the hotel overlooks a railway line, though this wasn't very busy, and if it ran through the night we weren't aware of it. The windows are double-glazed with blinds outside so our sleep wasn't disturbed at all. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of storage and wardrobe space. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and although there was no bath, the shower had more than enough features to compensate (I've never been sprayed in so many directions at once!)

There's plenty of open space around the hotel for lazing about, including a covered courtyard alongside the cafe/bar.

Breakfast offered a good range of juice, cereals, cold meats & cheeses, bread, fruit, though only opt for the coffee if you can take it Hungarian strength.

The wellness centre was immaculate, open for long hours and well equipped. We even had it to ourselves a couple of times.

We loved Siofok, though many of the bars/clubs had shut down for the season - we suspected it may be much livelier in July/August, but it was great for a peaceful break in September.

Plenty of restaurants around to choose from.

We spent a few days exploring the other towns around the lake. Getting the ferry to Tihany is an absolute must.

  • Liked — Having the pool to ourselves!
  • Disliked — The coffee at breakfast and the lack of tea making facilities in the room

“Hotel Best Western Janus Siofok”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2007

Hotel was OK value for money. It was clean and comfortable but there was no bath in our suite which isn't ideal when you have young kids. Service was friendly although sometimes difficult to find. The walls are also a bit thin and we were often woken up at 4 or 5am by other guests coming back from a night out.

  • Liked — Fairly Roomy
  • Disliked — Noise from other guests

“a great place to visit”

we also got the cheap flights with Ryan Air, pre booked our Chevrolet Cruiser with Fox Autos who were great, really easy to drive around Hungary as road signs are clearly marked and not a lot of traffic on the roads in June. Took an hour to get to Siofok but a lovely drive, found hotel easily, staff very good and air conditioning in our room was fixed upon request. Pool and fitness centre great, we also had a massge, facial and Alge keg wrap - really good and very cheap. We did a lot oif investigating before we went so the first day we headed around the lake to Vespren which is beautiful then followed the coast road to Tihany and caught the car ferry back to Siofok. The second day we headed West, found some beautiful Lipizanar's and saw the only Buffalo Ranch in Europe and passed through some very beautful places, travelling back to the North side and cathcing the car ferry again. The third day we followed the Wine tour taking us to where Bulls Blood is made, dropping down into Croatia then back up again - this area is not so touristy but great fun with some fantastic sights including the River Danube. On the fourth day we caught the car ferry again and did some touristy shopping in Tihany and then travelled onto Hevits to stay at the Ragner. The people in Hungary are lovely, they love the English, the food is great definatelty try the Hungarian cuisine, Southern Hungary is safe, beautiful, very modern (loads of Tescos) only down side is the Germans - definately worth a visit

“Nice staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2006

Nice people! I spent a week of travelling and decided to get back to London via Lake Balaton because of the cheap Ryanair flight. I had no idea where to stay so chose the largest town on Lake Balaton. The Best Western was great! I had wrongly assumed that the airport would be close by. Actually Ryanair flies out of an airport on the OTHER side of the lake - see [--]. This was extremely bad planning on my part.

However, the staff called the airport for a private van service. Unfortunately, the van service only picks up from certain locations. In my case, I had to get to a local Tesco (supermarket chain) in Siofok to get the van. The staff also called to get the bus info to get me to the Tesco. Because my flight was so early, they packed me a breakfast and got me coffee. That morning they gave me a wake call even though I hadn't even asked and when I missed my bus (due to language problem at the bus station), I ran back to the Best Western and they called me a taxi and waited with me to speak to the driver on my behalf to make sure I got there. Thank goodness!!

Note: The hotel and town were almost empty in the middle of June, which surprised me. On the plus side: the spa, pool, sauna, etc.in the hotel were also empty. Made for a nice relaxing day. Down side: there isn't much to see in this town, just lots of tourist shops and empty bars/restaurants. Apparently the Germans and Hungarians invade in July, to make for a springbreak Cabo type atmosphere. Next time I would venture around the Lake.

“A Strong Recommendation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2004

My Wife and I stayed at the Hotel for 5 nights in early September 2004, whilst I was working locally. We were impressed by the feeling of peace and serenity in this lovely building, formerly a chapel and school. The comfort of the furnishings, and the excellent food prepared for us in the Asia restaurant, both a la carte and table d'hote, added to the pleasure. Our room was huge, and the wellness facilities of the hotel were superb(pool, jaccuzi, fitness room, sauna, etc, etc) Staff were very attentive and polite, and the place was spotlessly clean. All in all, highly recommended. I travel all the time in my work, and only very rarely does a pleasurable experience like this occur. We will go back, for a holiday next time.
Please, give it a try, it's a lovely place to stay, with friendly people to look after you while you are there.
Full marks Janus Atrium!
Thank You.
David and Pat
