“cramped accomodation with dodgy breakfast”

We recently stayed at the Szinbad Panzio in our visit to Pecs. Upon arrival, we stopped our car in front of the hotel, & went in to inquire, but was promptly chased off by a grumpy restaurant staff.
The hotel room was very cramped. There was no space to walk, one had to crabwalk from one end of the room to another as the beds was very near the desk. The ' bedsheets' were too short for the mattresses, and the pillows were in fact cushions with no pillow cases on.
The next morning, to our horror, we found that the bread served was mouldy. Some unsuspecting guest at the nearby table had made a sandwich of the bread and was eating it. When the grumpy waiter was informed, he merely shrugged. The following day, the omelette with ham and the omelette with mushroom was served half cooked with bits of egg white still runny and transparent.
On the positive side, the reception staff was friendly and the accomodation reasonably priced. We felt attention needs to be paid to hygiene on the food and accomodation front.

“A great little find....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2010

Remembering hotels from 20 years ago, we approached with trepidation. Getting to our room was a maze of corridors but it was very spacious, clean, with a huge bathroom and sunken bath. The food 20 years ago was another horror, but we discovered that the Panzio's restaurant was our best option and ate very well. All in all, a really good stay.

“Sports and Fun!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2009

My school was in Pecs for a sports competition involving all the medical schools in the country, and I took the opportunity with my friends to look around. We stayed at the Szinbad Panzio, and visited the castles. It had just rained before we started touring, so there was this slight wet feel to it, combined with the somewhat dark clouds too. Awesome! Also, there is this lovely restaurant below the rock very close to Szinbad, called the Maestro. They serve the best lasagna I have ever had! I would go back there in a heartbeat!

“Nice little surprize!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2009

We stayed at the Szinbad on the spur of the moment when accommodations with friends did not work out. It happened to be a blazing hot 90 degrees plus when we arrived and really needed a room with air conditioning and firm beds. Both were lovely at the Szinbad. We were in room #11 on the top floor (no elevator, 3rd floor). It was at the back of the establishment, not street side. It had two full sized beds and a small but adequate bathroom. Our room was large by Hungarian standards and comfortable. As mentioned in other reviews, it is very near the city center, easy walking distance. We did take a cab to and from the train station. Breakfast was included, served by a mostly grumpy waiter, but good with strong coffee and hot milk. Also, the rates were $65. US per night. But, also, as noted, cash only. We had a wonderful experience in Pec's in general.

Would definitely stay here again or recommend it to a friend.

“Colloquial atmosphere, comfortable furnishings, and affordable.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 April 2009

Stayed here for 4 nights 9 -13 Apr 2009. We wanted a hotel with a colloquial atmosphere, close to central historical district, and not expensive. This panzio hit the mark. This panzio is on west side of the historical district so you can easily walk and sightsee. Lovely courtyard, nicely furnished, and good Hungarian food. The included breakfast is provided in a nice restaurant. You can even order from a menu. Restaurant staff is very professional and formally dressed. Desk clerks can speak English and were very helpful with information. They even helped with our delayed luggage which the airline had to drive down from Budapest. Hotel only accepts cash but there is an ATM just down the street. Parking is tight, but available and free. Also, there is WiFi. This is not luxurious but well furnished and charmingly decorated. Bath included an enclosed shower. We found a touch of Hungary without sacrificing comfort.
