“Would stay here again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2006

Stayed at the Helikon for 5 nights with my husband in September 2006.
Arrived via the local airport so transfer time was really short, and room was immediately available.
Room was spotless, especially the bathroom, although both on the small side. Bed very low, but was comfortable enough, and had two single duvets rather than a double one.
No tea and coffee making facilities, a small mini bar and had a tv, plenty of mirrors and adequate lighting. Also a couple of lounge chairs and a small table. Small balcony, but no chairs. Great views of the lake, and at night and in the morning could hear the lake lapping against the shore. Were lots of mosquitos around, but the net curtain kept most of them out. No air conditioning, but it was fine with the balcony door open and the net curtain across. We were hardly in the room anyway and it was perfectly ok if you are using the hotel as a base to travel around and sight see the local area.
You do hear the train station if the wind is coming from there.

We had only booked breakfast there, which was perfectly adequate, if same every day. Staff were friendly and pleasant, and most spoke some english or german, which was the same iin the local area. Not too many english tourists around either.
Did not use the pool, or any of the facilities really, but did visit the island, not very exciting! Were going to hire bicycles but went wine tasting instead.

Would stay here again, its only a short walk through the park to the small town, and very close to the bus and train connections.

“Needed AirConditioning”

I stayed in this Hotel on a package holiday in a very hot and muggy June . The Hotel was clean and though the balconies in the bedrooms were on the small size the rooms themselves were fine if a little in need of some TLC . The staff were friendly and helpful and the food plentiful if a little on the repative side . What the hotel really cried out for was air conditioning many other guests commented on this as the place was very hot and stuffy . The coolest room was the usually almost deserted pool . Overall pretty good for he price paid but in a hotel recently refurbished in places please please airconditioning add some for everybodies sake

“Expensive for what you get”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2005

As with the other reviewer of this hotel we had a standard room. I guess that the superior rooms have been refurbished for use by the major tour operators but it is quite disapointing to see the difference in the two types of room. This first becomes apparent when the carpet changes. New blue carpet for the superior rooms, old brown carpet with frequent patches for the standard rooms. Our standard room was OK but the 70s decor and fittings looked a little shabby. The room door didn't fit properly but did lock. The carpet was clean but stained. The cupboards were also showing their age with broken hinges and marks around the handles from years of use. The TV and minibar were fine. The beds were two singles pushed together but this is common in Hungary so we were expecting this. When I first saw the beds I thought they sagged in the middle however they were comfortable enough and I slept well every night. The balcony is a small triangular section of concrete with a rusty barrier. It was just big enough for one chair but no more. The standard rooms are on the side of the hotel so while you can see the lake it isn't the best view. The bathroom was fine if a little small but the wired in hairdryer was a useful feature.
Breakfast is a buffet of breads, cold meats, cheeses, sausage, egg, bacon (although as in the rest of Hungary 'bacon' is just the fat with very little meat), cereal and yogurt. There is plenty to choose from and lots of it. If the weather is good there are tables on a covered terrace which makes a great location for the first meal of the day.
The hotel has a very small man made 'island' which makes swimming easy and the inflatable trampaline and banana are great fun. During the week we came accross several activities that had been organised for children, from craft to aerobics and a disco.
Overall the standard rooms are expensive considering their dire need of refurbishment. The facilities and location help make up for this.

“Not as good as it looks.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2005

Tour operators and the hotel's own website sell this as an above average hotel, but there are shortcomings.

I visited in June 2005, having booked a standard room. There are superior rooms, but as the brochure said all rooms had been refurbished in 2004 and I don't spend much time in the room, I thought the standard would be OK.

The room I was allocated certainly had not been refurbished, other than the spankling new bathroom. Carpets were badly stained, the furniture was battle scarred 1970's vintage and the balcony doors were virtually impossible to open without dislodging a serious amount of plaster from the frames (They have replaced these only on the lake front side of the hotel - those at the side are the originals!). Speaking to ther guests indicated my room was no worse than other standard rooms, and those in superior rooms thought them adequate for a three star hotel. Room cleaning was minimal, sheets were never changed during the week and most of the towels were 'shredded'.

Food is OK and plentiful, if a bit overcooked and repetitive. Prices in the hotel bars are extortionate compared with local bars - they are empty most of the time and never more than one or two people when occupied. Service is painfullyslow - suprising when there were three staff in one bar and I was the only customer. Don't expect a smile!

Sports and SPA facilities, by contrast, are excellent.
