This hotel was fantastic value for what you got and while great as a stopover or base to visit lake Balaton or the Heviz Thermal lake (2nd largest in the world) it might not be a place to stay for a week just to use its leisure facilities.
Its really focused at Older German couples who want a few leisurely days away and only a handful of staff speak Fully conversant english but there were always a couple on duty who did.
We paid something like €70 for one night inc breakfast and for that it was amazing. Its clean, has decent if a little dated facilities (sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool, jacuzzi and outdoor thermal spa pool, all a little small by todays standards but more than adequate to take 6 or 8 people, plus a modern, heated outdoor 25M pool, hairdressers and thermal spa therapies) and service is very good indeed. The Hotel is 2 seperate buildings joined by a long glass passageway and I dont know if one side is posher than the other but if you have difficulty walking I'd make sure you were in the more modern building named "Anna" I think. We were in the older side ("Benjamin") and rooms dont have air conditioning but are very spacious with pleasant ensuite, mini bar and a lift to all floors. Food was in Buffet style both dinner and breakfast. Very Germanic in style with plenty of choice Though nothing outstanding. Not a romantic restaurant more of a motorway services decor with good service, but you will never be hungry!
Location is ok. Its easy to find but a bit of a walk to the Thermal Lake (15 mins perhaps) but theres dotto road trains that can take you there and back during the day or else you could drive (theres plenty of parking at the hotel and the lake). We didnt see the town as such but I got the feeling there wasnt much to see other than the lake, which in summer looks wonderful.
I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are looking for great value on a budget. We were on a motorbike trip and are normally very happy with 2-3* hotels and it was a fantastic place to relax for a day before heading home. However if you're used to 4star hotels and looking for a longer stay with plush modern facilities you have probably arrived 20 years too late, purely because things have moved on not because Hotel Helios has dropped in standard.
