We went for a very last minute 4 day break to Budapest and picked this hotel purely because it was so very cheap. It may be up in the hills... but the public transport is excellent, and you can get down to Moskva Ter (the hub for loads of trams and buses) on the comfy modern buses in about 20 minutes... and its really interesting watching out the window.
When we went (at the end of February) there was beautiful thick snow in the area around the hotel (whereas there wasnt a hint of snow anywhere in the city) and it was quite magical to come back to at the end of the day. One day we saw about 50 little kids run out of the school down the road with sledges to the large open field/hill and there were even people skiing there! You just wouldn't get things like that happening in a city centre hotel!
The hotel was very dated, often amusingly so, but it was perfectly clean and the staff were very helpful indeed. There was a good selection at breakfast, and it takes place in the top (about 6th i think) floor restaurant... so as the mist cleared in the morning you got a really lovely view, and there was even a terrace you could go out on.
The hotel bar was always busy, with residents and locals. We met a few english couples there, who were all very pleasently surprised with their bargain holiday!). Plenty of free pretzels, very cheap drinks, friendly bar staff, a ten pin bowling alley (!), ping pong and a free computer with internet.
The room was basic and again, very dated, but we thought it gave it a cute Soviet feel! The swimming pool was very unusual, with an oldfashioned weights gym on the poolside and the lifeguard insisted you put on one of the swimming hats (no matter how short your hair is!) so you may want to take your own. The pool appeared to have no chlorine in it, which was lovely to swim in, but perhaps not so hygenic?
We really did have a lovely time there - it was the perfect place to retreat to after a busy day of sightseeing. It was Frrreezing outside, but it was always toasty and the staff welcoming. We would often stay out in the city late into the evening and never had any trouble getting back. The only taxi we used in the whole holiday was to get to the airport on the last day... on the way from the airport when we first landed we used the airport bus and then the city buses and found the hotel very easily (even though it was dark!). Just get on the Normafa bus at Moskva Ter and ask for the "Hotel Olympia" (now closed down) bus stop.
