“BUDAPEST-NEWMARKET TRAVEL DEC 2011”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

people found this review helpful

FLIGHTS: Well timed flights from Manchester to Gatwick, all linked up well and good support from BA flight crews, worth the effort. Met Newmarket tour manager at Budapest airport. Very amicable chap, well organised and capable.
HOTEL: Selected after reading TA information. Stayed in room 104, yes right at the cross roads and on the front. Room was very clean and well decorated. Room was warm (it was December) fresh towels daily, all provided by friendly and helpful staff. We stayed On B&B basis, however the Continental breakfast choice and presenttation was well above that normally found. The hotel did have a restaurant but we preferred to eat out (take in the city and its atmosphere).Would definetly stay here again.
BUDAPEST: Beautiful city, with clean presentation, friendly people, interesting architecture. Whilst included in our holiday, we would recommend that any first time visitors take a city tour to see all the sites and prioritise re-visits. Dont forget your trip on the Danube (take a boat!)
We did go for the Christmas market, which although good, were not quite on a par with those we had seen in many areas of Germany (come on Budapest! you can do it) . We would add that there are many places to eat at good prices, walk round, build your appetite you will not be dissapointed. These also included lots of lovely/friendly bistro-cafes serving all manner of tempting drinks and snacks (yes some were even alcoholic!)

Room Tip: winter: no problems assuming windows are not reqd to be open (traffic noise at night?) room was air...

Dear joakwins!

Thank you very much for taking your time to write such long and well-constructed review about Danubius Hotel Astoria.
I am glad to read that you were completely satisfied with your room on the corner (nice sight), the decoration, the celanness and also the temperature thanks to the air condition in all of our rooms. I am really happy to read that you found our breakfast well above the normal.
Budapest is indeed a very beautiful city, it is worth to take a look at the top of the buildings, and you can discover suprisingly interesting architecture. It is a must visiting the Christmas market during the winter time, I personaly find it quite pleasant and beautiful, and of course you can’t leave it with an empty stomache:).
Thank you very much for recommending Danubius Hotel Astoria to other travellers, I hope we can welcome you again in our Hotel soon.

Kind regards,

“Great Value with Old World Charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

We stayed for a week at the Hotel Astoria Budapest and had a very pleasant experience. Our room was spacious, nicely decorated, and included one and a half bathes. The main bath was especially nice, with granite countertops, a full-sized bathtub, and a separate glass-enclosed shower. We loved the old-world charm of the lobby and liked the breakfast buffet, although I would have preferred thicker yogurt and bacon rather than the meats offered. We also ate in the restaurant several times and were quite satisfied. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean, recently remodeled, and the location is ideal.
I am very puzzled by the previous bad review and believe there must have been another issue the reviewer didn't reveal. We would stay at the Astoria Budapest again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms with one and a half baths!

“Hotel Astoria Budapest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

My wife and I stayed in the Danubius Hotel Astoria. It is a pleasant hotel with plenty of character. It is in a good location, close to restaurants and sightseeing buses. The breakfast was svery good as were the meals in the main restaurant. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms clean if a bit on the small side, still comfortable.

Room Tip: Not sure, our room was small but comfortable.

“Historic Hotel in central location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012
1
person found this review helpful

I loved this historic hotel. It reflects the grandeur of the early 1900s particularly the dining rooms and reception halls with their high ceilings, glass and chandeliers. We came on a very good flight-and-hotel deal from BA but upgraded from the 'de luxe' room (which came with the package and was a bit small) to a lovely Junior suite for about 20 euros extra a night. The suite was on the 6th floor and very quiet and comfortable.
The inclusive breakfast offered masses of choice and set us up for the day. The Mirror restaurant provided the two best evening meals of our stay in Budapest. I agree with another of your reviewers that the reception staff were not very welcoming but maybe that's a cultural thing and as they were very helpful and efficient I have no complaints.
Wi-fi worked fine in our room. It wasn't free but not very expensive either.
The location was ideal for us as we walk everywhere and most of the things we wanted to see were well within walking distance. There is also a metro station nearby for ventures further afield.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms on the side street are quieter.

“Good location, average otherwise.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

So we were very excited about this hotel based on the location and photos. When we arrived, it was hard to find a place to park and offload our bags (the small area in the front was taken up by cabs). After a little questionable parking (figured it would only be short term, so....) we got in for check in. THe bell boy was fantastic, friendly and helpful, not something I can say for the two men behind the desk. They were not UN-helpful, per se, but weren't exactly welcoming either. Our room was nice, clean and comfortable with a good balcony. Downside is the street below was very noisy and, even on the 5th floor in a deluxe room, there was plenty of noise. The bathroom was nice and big, though the half glass door shower is not my favorite since it makes a mess. Also, the TV system was difficult to use and the movie selection was tow older movies and some "adult entertainment". We tried breakfast the next morning and while, again, not bad, wasn't worth the $18 a person given the bakery next door and plenty of cafes around.
OK, so I know that sounds less than desirable. What makes this hotel worth while is the location. It is very close to great sights, the subway (though we walked and didn't use it) and plenty to do, see and dine.
For location and price, I'd recommend this hotel. It is comfortable, but I think better service and some soundproofing would have made it worth its 4 star rating.

Otherwise, Budapest is great and be sure to wander the Vaci and, if you can, see the Christmas market.

Oh, final note. Internet there was not good. The hotel's partner service did not work and the desk wasn't much help. We were able to get an open signal from nearby, but it was weak and unreliable. This is a bummer if you are technologically dependent like we can be.

Room Tip: Get one away from the street and bring a book since the wireless and TV are not very good.

Dear Krisjand!

Thank you for staying at Danubius Hotel Astoria and for taking the time to write a review. I am happy to read that you were so excited about our Hotel and that you found our bell boy fantastic and helpful. I am sorry about your oppinion about the front desk staff, most of the time they are very helpful and welcoming, friendly and smiling, but they are also just human, sometimes they can get tired too, but they try to do their best all the time. I am glad that you found your room nice, clean and comfortable with a good balcony and that you also liked your nice big bathroom. I am sorry about the noise, this is because the hotel is located in the centre of Budapest but we try to minimize the noise with the soundproof windows in all of our rooms. I am also sorry that you were not fully satisfied with our breakfast, I think we have a really great choice with many pasteries, hot and cold dishes, fruits, cakes, diet dishes, a wide selection of cheese, ham, eggs, cornflakes, juices, teas, coffees, yoghurts. But of course you are free to choose other options as well nearby, that is also one advantage of the central location, but it is more comfortable to eat right in the hotel where you don’t have to wait for your order, just take a plate and eat what you desire:). It is nice to read how much you liked our central location, there are indeed plenty to do, see and dine, and it is also worth to take a walk. I also suggest to take a moment and stop sometimes and look up on the buildings, you can see how stunning they are.
Thank you for your review, we always try to make our services better, and our guests more and more satisfied.
I hope we can welcome you again in our hotel.
