I booked this on lastminute.com and thought I was getting a good deal or so I thought! This place is in a pretty bad neighbourhood and the taxi driver taking me from the airport was not even too sure of his location, but he eventually found it with typical Hungarian perseverance. There were women hanging around up the street which I think maybe be prostitutes as the hotel is located in shabby type of neighbourhood.
There is a blue sign (Like the EU flag) outside and the hotel is actually located up several flights of unlit stairs. The lift is actually signposted as "Hotel Fortuna" but I mistook it for a locked door as it is an older soviet style lift..
The bed sheets were replaced but filthy with hairs and bedbugs, the mattress dates from Soviet times and the entire hotel is infested with bedbugs. This hotel attracts backpackers and students mainly due to its budget price range. I would consider it more like a bad quality hostel than a hotel.
The dried black bloodstains on the mattresses were a testimony that the bedbug infestation must be there for sometime . I have seen the damage they can do to your skin so I asked for a different room first in the hope that I got the short straw but two other free rooms were as bad with bedbugs and hairs (pubes) so I called a taxi and left about an hour after arriving for a different hotel.
Between bedbugs, human hairs and exposed wires it was too much, the sink almost collapsed up on me when I went to wash my hands after inspecting the sheets. plumbing fixtures were sealed with electrical tape and the the shower ceramic was all chipped.
There was a old 14" CRT soviet tv with CNN in English plus the usual European fare the hotel also has free wifi with the WPA key available from reception. A phone is also provided in the room but I did not use it.
There is also very little in the nearby neighbourhood except a Chinese restauran next door and overall t is intimidating to walk alone there by night.
I was disappointed with this hotel and had to leave after witnessing the conditions, however Budapest is a beautiful city with so much to do and see. The people are also quite friendly and even though this was a bad experience it did not ruin my holiday and I left Budapest with an overall quite favourable opinion.
