M wife and I have just returned from our second 3-night break in Budapest, this time staying at the Hilton Westend. We could find absolutely NOTHING to criticise about the property or the staff. We were lucky to be on the Executive Floor, where the rooms and beds are very large, with a huge TV and super bathroom, including a large free-standing shower (as well as bath) as we had requested. They look out over the glass roof of the Westend shopping centre (which has direct access from the foyer) to the ice rink!
The fitness centre is well equipped (and open 24 hours a day), including a small sauna which is kept on low heat and fires up to full power in a few minutes.
We must mention the breakfasts: we're used to enjoying Hilton breakfasts and this certainly lived up to our expectations - including 'champagne' always available on ice.
The only possible downside is that the hotel is geared towards conference business and you can't avoid the potentially large number of delegates; however, they're largely locked away for most of the day!
One more hopefully helpful comment concerns the transfer from the airport: virtually all the information we obtained led us to choosing the bus/metro combination on the way in; however, if you're using Terminal 1 (generally for low-cost airlines) and staying at (or in the vicinity of) the Hilton Westend, by far the best answer is a direct TRAIN connection (costing from just over £1) from Terminal 1 (which is NOT easily connected to Terminal 2) to the main line station immediately adjacent to the hotel. Trains run every 10-20 minutes and you get a choice between local and inter-city trains (each takes around 20 minutes). I can't understand why this is not better publicised - it worked perfectly for us on the return journey.
Finally, if the weather's nice and you want to explore the city, do try Free Budapest Walking Tours - three half-day tours are available and we did them all in 2-days! They are genuinely free (subject to a tip, as long as you're satisfied) and the guides we had were very helpful and informative - and very friendly with good English (but a multinational group of mainly young tourists). Also, do take the tour of the Parliament building, which is free if you take your EU passport - it's quite marvellous inside.
Great place for a short break - and don't forget to try the thermal baths - especially the old Turkish ones (Radas and Kiraly).
Room Tip: Executive floor if you can
