“Ibis "Eat Your Heart Out" ... Real Budapest Value !”
Stayed at the Eben for six nights at the end of July.
Chose the hotel as it was just ten minute walk from my aunt's small flat where my parents were already staying, as I fancied a bit more space, my own bathroom (!), and "independence".
So I knew the locality inside out (the hotel is in an area of communist era housing estate, on a main road, and with excellent transport links - tram stop directly outside with 4 min frequency, & if you walk the metro is just 10 minutes away - city centre about 20 min from the hotel doorway).
The "Sugar" & "Arcade" shopping centres by the metro are as good a normally priced shopping experience you get in Budapest ... posh hairdressers, internet cafe & supermarket too if you're staying a while. And a market area with local fast food "langos" stalls, "gyros" (kebabs !), and some rather ramshackle bars where the locals drink ...
And did I choose well for 42 euro (Yeego.com) per night !
Huge well decorated spotlessly clean room, comfy bed (two really wide singles pushed together to make an enormous "double"), programmable air conditioning, sat TV, cheap mini-bar, decent wardrobe space & lots of mirrors, modern fully tiled bathroom with bath & shower, hairdrier (and even a little basket with soaps, shampoos, tissue packs, shower caps !) ...
Free wi-fi was uninterruptedly available throughout the hotel, with a public PC in the lobby too.
I'm kind of aware I got a "deluxe" room, and I guess it was because I was a single woman, travelling alone, with a very Hungarian surname, rather than the Slovakian & German coach parties they normally cater for. Likewise being a fluent Hungarian speaker (but obviously not native) probably coloured my experience with the hotel staff who were as lovely, friendly and helpful as it gets in Budapest.
Breakfast was excellent, more fresh fruit, cereals, preserves, yoghurts than you could shake a stick at. Variety of really fresh bread, and a large toaster too. Premium cold meats, salamis, ham, pate & a fresh salad selection. Always light and fluffy hungarian style paprika omelette (yummy !), and even "goulash" type potato and meat dishes if you were determined to eat enough to skip lunch ! This is a breakfast buffet that puts most UK 4-star+ business hotels to shame (if you forget about the watery fruit juices) !
Had a light lunch there, sitting on their shaded balcony, on the one occasion I got to bed too late to make breakfast ... fish & salad ... perfect and with unusually decent local wine at a sensible price. Their "menu" looked enticing, but guess you'd be silly to eat there when just across the road the "Lajos Kiraly" restaurant offers a real Hungarian gourmet experience (with local clientel) for a similar price, and way cheaper than equivalent inner city eateries.
Negatives ... only that the between room sound insulation was somewhat lacking (so you're at the mercy of how rowdy your neighbours might be), that the sofas and tables in the corridoors encourage late night revellers to continue their party into really early hours (happened once), and that smoking is allowed in the lobby and at the corridoor tables. And yes there was a peculiar smell coming up the bathroom floor drain (kept it covered with the bath mat !), but that's Budapest in the Summer for you.
Oh ... and metro stops around 11pm, trams go a bit past midnight ... so you might find yourself paying an £8 taxi fare to get home after a late night out (though there is a good night bus service to where you catch the metro). But the same applies if you're staying at two of the three Ibis hotels.
As for stuff being stolen, my room came with a free to use wall safe in the wardrobe, so no excuses !
Honestly if you're looking for a luxury experience for around £35 a night, are willing to experience tthe suburbs, you can't go wrong with this hotel.
