“Alert! Might spoil the visit to Budapest”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Budapest is an ideal place where one can enjoy excellent hotel for moderate price so it is pity that we made a mistake and stayed in Golden Park Hotel for two days in January 2012. The hotel was so not to our taste that we wondered the streets of beautiful Budapest up to the latest hours just to postpone going back into our room.

Positive side is that the hotel is on a good location near the main railway station, metro, bus station and tram station so going to the city center is very easy. Public transport in Budapest is effective and cheap (1 EUR for metro/tram/bus ticket). Walking distance to the heart of the city is 30 minutes straight down the big avenue. For shoppingholics, there is a huge mall Arena just 200 meters from the hotel.

Golden Park Hotel is formally a 4-star hotel (see my photo) but in reality it is a 2-star up the most. Hotel facilities are used up and the whole hotel needs a complete renovation immediately. There are a lot of really small rooms so we insisted on changing the first room they gave us. Bathroom was bearable if you don't mind yellow spots on towels (?) and black fungus along a bathtub. Of course, there weren't any slippers, robes, soaps, shampoos and other things a 4-star hotel must have. Bed mattresses were deformed although we were so tired walking the whole day that we could sleep on a rock. Rooms do not have a mini bar but they have small refrigerators which can be filled up by food&drinks from surrounding shops. Air-conditioning was functioning OK which was pretty important during cold January nights.

Breakfast was the lamest I've ever seen: everything was in whole-sale packaging. Honey, marmalade and butter were placed in joint pots and not in small retail packages. It is normal in private homes but it's really not appropriate for a hotel. Variety of food&drinks was among the poorest I've ever seen.

The other positive side is the English speaking staff. It seemed to us that they were very aware in what crappy hotel they work so they tried to help us as much as they could.

My recommendation is to stay in this hotel only if you are on extremely tight budget - everything above 35 EUR for a night is an overpayment. Feel free to check our photos of the hotel so make your own conclusions. But next time we come to Budapest, we'll stay in some other hotel, maybe in some new 4-star hotel where the price is 50-70 EUR per night. Because it is a pity to spoil the visit to fascinating Budapest with a lousy accommodation.

Room Tip: A lot of extremely small rooms; always ask for a better one.

“great breakfast!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

I stayed only one night at this hotel but I was very satisfied with everything. First of all, it's situated right across the keleti train station which means that there's both metro&bus stops nearby, and if you really want to walk then you'd have about 30-45 mins walk to the Vatca utca which is the center of the city. By underground, it's a 10 min ride. Also, you're close to the heroe's square. I stayed in a double room at the 6th floor. It was medium sized, comfortable bed, big wardrobe, decent bathroom with a bathtub, tv, etc. The only problem was the air-con, it was too hot, and I couldn't adjust it. The breakfast was plentiful, really good choice of sweet and more substantial food (omellete, french toast, salami,,sausages). All in all, very satisfied. Perhaps, it doesn't really look like a 4 star hotel, but I was happy with the price, location, cleanliness, food, so i guess it's a good choice.

“Good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

Good location. We had a twin room, which was very small (we could hardly move through it), bathroom was large. Room had a balcony. Right next to the hotel is a shopping cenar Arena. The nearest metro station Keleti, well connected with the rest of the city. Walk from the hotel to the Vaci street about 15 minutes. Next to the hotel is a great pizzeria (from the hotel, you can enter it)
Pay attention to their website, they often have some special rates for rooms, as it turns out cheaper than through other portals.

“Good but not 4****”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Stayed for a week and to be honest, it's good for that time.

Yes, it is far from central Budapest but you have the 24 tram going from beside the hotel which you can link up to the 2 tram to take you along the Danube to the center and see the beautiful sights. Across the road is a Metro red line which goes all over too and links up with the other metro lines and of course a main train station for trips out of Budapest. We bought a Budapest card so have just been hopping on and off all of the transport. Very handy.

Anyhow, when we checked in, the man in reception was quite distant to us for want of a better word and i found it strange to be asked to fill out details on a card such as my date of birth, city of birth etc etc. I find those details are too personal to give out just for a room. I was then asked for my credit card details which took me aback as i assumed as it all had been paid in full before hand that this would not be needed.

We were given room 218 which had a small double bed in it and the usual stuff such as a tv and fridge. The fridge is empty so you can either buy stuff from the spar across the road or ask the bar to fill it for you. The room was so small you couldn't swing a cat in it, maybe ok for a couple for a night or two but certainly not a week.
I then discovered dirt marks on the sheets and hairs too, the curtains wouldn't close completely, the walls were lined with marks and there was a suspect mark in the shower and the sink was cracked. There was also a very strong smell of sulpher/sewage. The 24 tram stop is also outside the window but that wasn't too bad.
I thought maybe i was being a tad OCD as I tend to be so i left it as we were so tired but then we were woken by doors banging and kids up and down the hall at about 5am or so which was the last straw.

I went to the lady at the reception desk and politely explained about the room and noise and she informed me that 3 groups were checking out that day hence the noise but offered us a new room. I got to check the rooms before hand and chose room 201 which faces onto the street. It is a bigger room, has no bad smell, and is nice. There are still scuff marks on the walls and the sink is cracked again but look, it's comfortable and warm and the noise from the street is tolerable as after all you are in a city!

A tip for those commenting on the dark halls, you have to hit the light switches and the halls are lit up. It is a power saving method to have the lights on a timer. Regarding the people on the streets, they are fine. We haven't been approached by anyone and I think that any big city you go to, you will have to deal with those who are homeless or down on their luck being around but it's only as a tourist you notice this.

My advice is this;
1 - if you are staying at this hotel then don't expect the type of 4**** you would get in your home country.
2 - make the most of the amazing transport on the door step.
3 - learn how to say "hello", "thank you" and "you're welcome" at least. It WILL make a difference to your time in Budapest.

I would stay here again if I return to Budapest, no question.

Room Tip: Personally I think the rooms facing the street are a little bigger and the noise is not too bad.
