REVIEWER PERSPECTIVE:
* Mid-40’s single male traveler from the U.S.A. doing a 4 month world trip. During stay at this Hostel my 21 year old son was accompanying me.
*Focus has been on staying in budget accommodations. A good budget hotel/hostel for my standards is: secure, clean, comfortable, quiet at night, with reasonable access to the location I am visiting. I don’t mind staying in (or walking through) a working class neighborhood so long as there isn’t a perceived safety issue.
OVERVIEW: RECOMMENDED. This hostel is perfectly located in Budapest. It is two minutes walking from St. Stephen’s Basilica. The 2 owners (brother and sister) are there often and are super nice, and the rest of the staff is very helpful as well. It is perfect for the younger crowd who want to socialize… even though use of the common area after 12 is discouraged, it is not uncommon for it to be used later. If a quite night’s sleep is important, talk to staff to get the right room as noise from the common room can be an issue.
LOCATION and TRANSPORTATION: This is in the middle of Budapest, the location is perfect.
*Depending on what you want to see you might still need mass transportation because some of Budapest’s sights are spread out, but you can walk to many places. If you enjoy walking, both Parliament (10 to 12 minute walk) and the Castle area on the opposite side of the river (15 to 20 minute walk) can be reached easily.
*Restaurants and Bars: Many in the area within easy walking distance. There is an awesome restaurant behind the Basilica (the Basilica fronts on a plaza so “behind” the Basilica is a main road) named Luga’s. You can walk to it in 5 minutes. A very good dinner of Hungarian food for 2, with a couple beers, desert and tip can be had for $30 to $35 (US Dollars).
*There is an interesting city park about 5 minutes away. It has green space, a skate boarding area, and a “basement” where live music is performed. The park is “alive” day and night and hosts all types of people. Great people watching place.
INTERNET: One computer is available for use and there is free Wi-Fi as well.
SECURITY: We stayed in an individual room so we did not confirm if lockers are available in the dorms. The hostel seemed safe and secure.
STAFF: Staff is helpful and nice. They will do all they can to give you recommendations, print maps, etc. One of the Owners volunteered to take us to our bus stop on departure. The will do your laundry and return it in 24 hours for 8 Euros. Simply put this is a friendly, helpful group of people.
“FUN FACTOR”: You feel like you are staying at a friend's house.People gather in the common room and kitchen area and have a good time. There is a guitar, travel books, games, TV with DVD, and a Stereo in the common area. As referenced in the overview, socializing can occur until well after midnight. This can be an issue on some nights if you want to sleep. As an older traveler I noticed this about 3 of the 7 nights we stayed and it bothered me some, but my 21 year old son had no issues with it. If sleep is important talk to management to see if they can put you where the noise isn’t an issue.
SUMMARY: The location is perfect, staff is great and the hostel is fun, especially for the younger crowd. If noise is a concern , don’t discount this hostel before talking to staff about finding a quiet room.
