“Terrible Awful Service. DO NOT GO!!!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

I went with my family having a reservation for 4 people for a room with air conditioning and looking to the Balaton lake. When we arrived not only did we not get the room we requested and had a confirmation for, but the staff took on an attitude of total disregard. We got a room for 4 people, which really was a room with a double bed and a sofa bed (where the mattress was almost at floor level). Once you opened the sofa bed, there was absolutly no room to move. The closet space was ment for 2 people, and the bathroom while small was clean. The breakfast buffet was big and definetly good for meat lovers, but it offered little for those who do not enjoy having meats for breakfast. When I asked if I could get a "lecso" (hungarian dish) without meat, they graciously said yes. 20 minutes later I got my lecso with meat.
From what I could see the hotel caters to tours and cares very little about people not arriving with tours. The building is old with some renovations. The staff needs to be better trained. The only positive side of the hotel is that it has access to a private beach in the Balaton.
I was very disillusioned that this hotel of the Danubius Chain is not up to the standards of other hotels of this chain.
If I ever go back to Balatonfured I will make sure to make a reservations in another hotel, and I strongly suggest you do the same.

Dear Guest!
Thank you for your comments regarding your stay with us at the Hotel Annabella. We are very sorry to learn that not every services were up to your expectations.
We would like to kindly inform you about some hotel information what certainly slip your notice befor your reservation.
We are a 3 star cosy hotel and hence not comparable with other Danibus hotels, because nearly all others are health spa resort and / or 4 star hotels. But we agree all the Danubius standards orderd for 3 star hotels.
On our official website can be seen that air condition is only in the suites available. We offer for breakfast not only meals for meat lovers. Every breakfast consists of - according to the Danubius standard- the following dishes: 5-6 sort of croissants, stewed vegetables, french toast, 4 sort of muesli, yoghurt, boild eggs, scrambled eggs, eggsalad, jam, honey, butter, cheese, some kind of fruits.
Thank you for your understanding and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back at the hotel on a future occassion.

Best regards,
Orsolya Mayer

“Missed the Communist Era? Stay here and you're right there again...”

I used to go to this hotel 40 years age as a small child with my mother. Back then it was pretty nice since we did not know any better. Today, I can tell you not much has changed. This place has not really beed updated since 1972 neither has the attitude towards service. The rooms are tight and the beds are a joke. There is no a/c or ceiling fans anywhere in the hotel so if you're going during summer be aware. You can rent a room fan for about $2 per day if you are desperate. The pictures on the hotel website shows 2 twin beds but those are not to be found we had a room with a full bed and a so-called bed that was smaller then a twin and turned into a chair. Go figure? I travelled with 2 small kids and they could barely stand it. So if you are travelling with adults this may be a big problem for you. The bathroom were decent. Breakfast, Lunch/Dinner Buffett are included in price and was ok. The fruit was very poor but other items were ok. You can walk to the hotels private beach at Lake Balaton just a few hundred feet from hotel. This is pretty nice but you have to pay for lounge chairs of about $6. They nickle and dime you in this place. I have to say that we paid US prices for low level European service. We checked out a day early to do the extreme heat and when we stated why we were leaving early and asked if would get a partial refund we didn't even get as much as the shrug of a shoulder. The employees at the desk just didn't give a damn. This is not a place I will stay in the future nor will II recommend to anyone. If you go to Lake Balaton and are used to American level of service on the scale of a Sheraton or Hilton, you "must" stay at a 4 star property. This hotel is rated at 3 star and really falls into the bottom of this category.

Dear Gast!
Thank you for having taken the time to share your comments about your stay at our hotel.
We are very sorry that our hotel and its services did not meet with your expectations. Please, let me share some information with you regarding Hotel Annabella. Our Hotel was build in 1968 and meets still all the requirement of a 3 star hotel level, because in every year we had some renovations, such as building family rooms and indoor pool, renewing rooms, bathrooms, conference rooms, restaurant and in the suits there is an air condition! Totally we have 172 double and 211 twin rooms. It is important to tell befor the reservation, what kind of rooms would you like to have. Unfortunately refund is not possieble incase of heat, (because of the heat are coming people to the Lake), but of course in case of for example illness we can refund. In the hotel property sunbeds are available for free, on the beach for charge. As you can find in all official hotel description the room price contains "free entry to the beach", but for beach services everyone has to pay.
Knowing all this information we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back at the hotel on a future occassion!
Best regards,
Orsolya Mayer

“Not for families...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights... just about do-able. To start with, Hungary is very hot in the summer (30-35 degrees) and the rooms have no air-conditioning. We tried to book a family room, first, through an accomodation website. Later, we also called the hotel, just to confirm the booking. We were convinced to delete our booking with the website and go direct (because of the commission??) We have three, small boys, which we told them about. They gave us a more expensive price, but were reassured that it accomodates our family no bother. Not true!! Thank God, we got adjacent rooms, which we were told, we were lucky to get. The rooms had two single beds pushed together, each. When we rang reception, we were told that reservation won't be back before the following morning and they can't do anything for us. We were also told that we were lucky to get adjacent rooms, as it is not a standard at family bookings and there is no point complaining, because all their rooms are the same size. Eventually, they put a fold-out bed in, which only barely fit into the room. The staff is very unfriendly, generally. At one stage one of the waiters rolled his eyes at my husband, because he dared to call him to make an order. On arrival, we were told that we were too early and check-in was only from 2 PM. We were after a long journey with children, that were very tired. As I was sitting waiting, I noticed the receptionist handing keys over to two, German couples that were just checking-in. I went up to reception again, asking if any of our rooms were ready (we had three rooms booked, altogether). The receptionist made a phone call and told me that he can give me only one of the keys. At this time, it was 1.45 PM!!!!!! Upon departure the accomodation staff stormed in on us twice, before 10 AM, checking if they could start cleaning our room. I definitely would not recommend this hotel to a friend and will look for another option the next time we return.

Dear Gast!
Thank you for your review regarding your stay with us at the Hotel Annabella. Every feedback is really important for us. Firstly I would like to apologise for the misunderstanding during the booking process. As you mentioned you were with three small children and would like to book a family room. Of course we offer for families family room, with extra charge. But on the websites it is not possible to book a family room, because we do not have a lot. That is why you were called by the hotel, to offer for you a family room.
Please, let me share some additional information about the hotel. In all official hoteldescriptions can be read the check-in/out times: check-in FROM 14:00, check-out TILL 11:00. Of course if the rooms or one of the rooms are already ready, we get the key immediately. Guest in general would like to get to room earlier and stay longer, and it can results in wait for the next coming guest.
We hope in your understanding and even hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back at the hotel.

Best regards,
Orsolya Mayer

“Quite a basic hotel, but a good base for a beautiful region”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2011

Within easy walking distance of Balatonaracs train station, and Balatonfured town centre, we really enjoyed our stay here. The rooms are very basically furnished, and the plumbing in the bathroom is quite old fashioned, but the extensive breakfast buffet and lovely pool and location more than made up for this.
If I had to pick a gripe I'd say that the rooms get awfully stuffy without air conditioning, and the hotel didn't have fans we could have borrowed. We were there in June when the temperature was in the mid-twenties.
The stroll down to Balatonfured where there are more shops and some excellent bars and restaurants is very pleasant.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay with us in the Hotel Annabella.
I totally agree with you that the region is beautiful, Balatonfüred is really one of the most developing city in the area.
Please, let me inform you about some services what are possible in the hotel.
The room what you have reserved was a so called economy type, this is the bacis roomtype, what we have. The other ones (standard and superior) are more modern and more comfortable - the rooms and the bathrooms, too -, but the price differences are not considerable. Air conditioning is now only in the suites, but it is possible the borrow a fan at the reception.
If you do the honour to us choosing Hotel Annabella again, I would like to kindly offer you to reserve a higher category of room.
We hope that we can welcome you back as our guest to the hotel!

Best regards,
Orsolya Mayer

“Decent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2010

I had some hesitation staying here given the other reviews, but I have to say that I didn't find a reason not to stay here. We were in a standard room and had plenty of space. Bathroom was also spacious. Everything was clean, though the carpeting could use a replacement throughout. But this might also have been because we were with our dog and therefore in a dog specific room. Note, their web site says no pets, but I got conflicting information on this so I called ahead of time and they ARE accepted.

The breakfast buffet was very extensive. Certainly one of the better ones I've seen. You could easily skip lunch with the amount and type of food they have available for breakfast. Though the seemed stingy on refilling the potatoes.

Staff's English ability varied but all were friendly and, naturally, their German was much, much better. Plenty of free parking.

We pretty much just slept there so can't offer any reviews on the pool and other services. Only wish it were a little closer to the action. It is walkable but takes awhile.
